Job summary

Hickok Cole in Washington, DC, seeks a Commercial Architect/Designer with 5–8 years of experience to join a hybrid work team (3 days in office, 2 days remote). You will lead design concepts, develop construction documents, and collaborate with consultants to meet program, budget, and zoning requirements.

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong presentation and documentation skills, fluency in English, and a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Interior Design. LEED/WELL accreditation is a plus.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or Interior Design required.
• 5–8 years of experience in Commercial projects.
• Based in Washington, DC metro area for hybrid work (3 days in office, 2 days remote).
• Experience in repositioning/commercial projects a plus.
• Excellent design and documentation skills; strong presentation abilities.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop project design concepts with Design Directors.
• Produce accurate construction documents and detailing.
• Coordinate with consultants to align design with budget and code constraints.
• Address program goals through research on systems, materials, and zoning.
• Mentor junior staff and contribute to firm-wide design initiatives.

What we are looking for

• Commercial Architects and Interior Designerswith 5-8 years of experience
• Based in Washington, DC metro area for hybrid work (3 days in office, 2 days remote).
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or Interior Design
• Experience in Commercial projects and repositioning is a plus!
• Exhibits design and technological sophistication, and is self-starting, energetic, and creative
• Excellent Revit, SketchUp, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign skills
• Ability to work with the Senior Designer to develop strong design concepts and accurately document them in design presentations and construction documents
• Experience with space planning, FF&E specifications, material selections, codes, and coordination with consultants
• Experience with the construction administration process
• Excellent 3D graphic rendering skills
• Fluent in written and spoken English
• Valid work permit (USA)

What you will do

• Select and present building systems and design materials to clients and collaborate closely to address program, goals, and feedback.
• Work with Design Directors to lead and develop the project design vision, carrying design intent through all phases.
• Produce creative design solutions and accurate construction detailing, ensuring design intent is upheld in construction documents and specifications.
• Conduct building systems, materials, zoning, and code research, and apply findings to design decisions.
• Coordinate with project managers and consultants to align design with budget, schedule, zoning, and code constraints.
• Lead, mentor, and delegate work within the project team, fostering collaboration and professional growth.
• Oversee and participate in design peer reviews and jurisdictional approval processes as required.
• Integrate sustainable design strategies and support LEED or other sustainability goals when applicable.
• Contribute to firm-wide design culture through communication, mentorship, and participation in office-wide design initiatives.
