Job description

Reports to: Senior Director, Commercial Analytics

About the Company

A growing utility scale renewable energy company focused on the development and investment of solar, battery storage, and hybrid energy projects across major U.S. power markets.

The company is in a significant period of growth, expanding its development portfolio and increasing its activity across project development, acquisitions, financing, and operations. Commercial Analytics is a core function of the business, providing the market intelligence that guides project development, project valuation, and capital allocation.

About the Role

The Commercial Analytics Associate will become a key contributor to the company's in house commercial analytics capability. Working closely with the Senior Director of Commercial Analytics, this role will develop and maintain production cost models, forecast market fundamentals, improve analytical automation, and provide actionable commercial insights that directly influence project siting, portfolio strategy, and investment decisions.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys combining quantitative analysis, programming, and electricity market fundamentals to solve complex problems in a fast paced renewable energy development environment.

The Commercial Analytics Associate is responsible for conducting research using industry databases and statistical tools to support fundamental modeling of the U.S. electricity system across multiple power markets. A successful candidate will play an active role in conducting detailed analysis on U.S. power markets, including tracking and forecasting policy developments, building and maintaining databases and models, and forecasting supply, demand, and prices in those markets. The candidate's efforts will track and analyze transmission systems, interconnection queues, and load and generation resources not just as they exist today, but how they are likely to be in the future. The role is critical to the siting and de risking efforts of the entire development portfolio and will provide strategic input while creating automated post processing tools for proprietary, in house modeling and study efforts.

Key Responsibilities
Production Cost Modeling & Market Analysis
  • Build, maintain, and execute production cost models to evaluate future market conditions across multiple ISOs and balancing authorities.
  • Analyze energy, ancillary service, congestion, capacity, and renewable attribute markets to forecast project revenues and identify market opportunities.
  • Support long term forecasts of generation expansion, retirements, transmission development, load growth, and policy changes affecting wholesale electricity markets.
  • Evaluate market fundamentals to support greenfield development, project acquisitions, and strategic portfolio planning.
Commercial Modeling & Project Support
  • Support commercial valuation of utility scale solar, storage, and hybrid projects throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Develop scenario analyses that quantify the impact of changing market assumptions, transmission expansion, renewable penetration, and load growth.
  • Assist in evaluating congestion, basis risk, curtailment, and costs of transmission service on project economics.
  • Prepare technical summaries and presentations that communicate project benefit analyses to development, executive leadership, potential offtake and investment partners.
Automation, Data & Tool Development
  • Develop and maintain automated workflows using Python, SQL, or similar programming languages to improve model preparation, execution, and post processing.
  • Build and maintain databases supporting production cost modeling, market forecasts, and commercial analytics.
  • Improve data quality, repeatability, and analytical efficiency through automation and standardized processes.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage AI assisted tools for data processing, scenario generation, report development, and analytical workflows.
  • Research and maintain assumptions related to fuel prices, generation technologies, storage performance, emissions policies, and market design.
  • Support development of forward looking market scenarios that improve investment decision making.
Technical Development & Career Progression
  • As the company continues to grow, this role offers the opportunity to develop deep expertise in wholesale electricity markets, take ownership of key analytical initiatives, and play an increasingly influential role in shaping the company's commercial analytics capabilities and investment strategy.
  • Continuously improve understanding of production cost modeling, nodal pricing, congestion analysis, storage optimization, and renewable energy valuation.
  • Work closely with the Senior Director of Commercial Analytics to enhance the company's commercial analytics framework and internal modeling capabilities.
  • Contribute new ideas that improve the speed, consistency, and quality of commercial decision making.
Qualifications & Experience
