MyMichigan Health is seeking a Switchboard Operator to answer inbound calls for two locations, relay messages, and provide general information to internal and external customers following established protocols.

You will maintain desk directories, operate beeper/paging systems, and support disaster drills and communications while delivering courteous, professional service in a fast paced health system. Proficiency in Microsoft Windows is required.

Summary

This position answers all incoming calls for two locations. Communicates codes, alerts, drills, and other announcements. This position functions as the first point of customer contact for internal and external customers.

Responsibilities

• (20%)* Receives and relays internal and external calls and provides general information according to protocol.
• (20%)* Maintains desk directories, on-call list, reference guides, and other associated reference materials.
• (20%)* Operates beeper and paging system to contact personnel and code team.
• (20%)* Communicates codes, alerts, drills, and other announcements according to established policies and protocols, including disaster management plans.
• (20%)* Responds and directs customers to appropriate departments.

Other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

• Knowledge of Switchboard practices and procedures as normally acquired through 18 months to two years experience working in the medical center or similar setting preferred but not required.
• Information retention skills needed to accurately take and relay messages.
• Organizational skills needed to prioritize workload and record information accurately.
• Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
• Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
• Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
• Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
• Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
• Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
• Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
• Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
