Job summary

Institute for Building Technology and Safety (IBTS) seeks a Building Inspector to inspect residential and commercial structures for code compliance, review plans, and issue correction notices. The role requires evaluating foundations, framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and life-safety systems, and coordinating with contractors, architects, and city staff.

Requires ICC certifications and knowledge of LSUCC/UDC codes. The candidate will work outdoors, communicate clearly, and maintain records.

Qualifications

• ICC codes knowledge and local regulations.
• Ability to interpret and enforce plans, specs, blueprints, and codes.
• Strong math, reporting, and computer skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication across stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently and manage tasks efficiently.
• Knowledge of construction materials, methods, and trades.
• Ability to identify design flaws and corrective actions.
• Familiarity with City Code of Ordinances and UDC.
• Ability to use GIS/GPS tools.
• Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Inspect residential and commercial structures for code compliance.
• Evaluate foundations, framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and life-safety systems.
• Review plans to verify compliance with LSUCC, City Code, UDC, and approved plans.
• Issue correction notices and Stop Work Orders; report violations.
• Respond to inquiries from contractors, architects, developers, city staff and the public.
• Maintain inspection records and perform related clerical tasks.
• Conduct inspections aligned with LSUCC specialties under Building Official.
• Investigate and resolve citizen complaints related to construction and permits.
• Enforce property maintenance codes and perform occupancy inspections.
• Prepare reports and testify in court as needed.
• Coordinate inspections and plan reviews with stakeholders.
• Explain code requirements firmly and impartially.
• Perform emergency inspections as needed.
