Overview

This position is located on site at the Newport News Shipyard (NNS) in Virginia at the Engineering Liaison Office (ELO).

Department 460 ELO is seeking highly motivated candidates to support submarine construction activities for the COLUMBIA Class. D460 ELO is responsible for resolving design issues, troubleshooting construction problems, providing technical support for manufacturing operations, verifying and certifying as-built dimensions and configurations, and implementing process improvements. The department's main goal is to deliver timely, high-quality engineering support for all manufacturing, steel fabrication, and outfitting activities at NNS. Engineers in D460 ELO are exposed to various aspects of submarine design and construction, offering opportunities for continuous growth, leadership, and career advancement.

Selected individuals will provide structural technical support for submarine construction activities for COLUMBIA Class submarines at NNS. The role requires ongoing development of technical and project management skills. The candidate will manage construction issues throughout steel fabrication, manufacturing, and outfitting, and communicate engineering assessments with Operations, trade, planning, and ship's management teams. They will also relay shipyard priorities to relevant engineering groups.

Responsibilities

  1. Proactively assist trade personnel in overcoming construction problems and facilitate implementation of design and process improvements.
  2. Adjudicate technical issues encountered during construction.
  3. Interpret design, drawing, and specification requirements.
  4. Provide clear and timely direction or evaluation to Newport News Shipyard trades via disposition of Change Notices (CNs) and TIR Unsats.
  5. Respond to Vendor Information Requests (VIRs) supporting vendor-built structures or those to be installed by NNS.
  6. Occasionally perform engineering calculations for "as-built" configurations.
  7. Interface with trade personnel, management, and on-site Navy representatives.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (mechanical, aerospace, civil (structural), naval architecture, marine/ocean, electrical, or equivalent).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Access.
  • Experience with the design, development, and/or operation of submarine systems, components, or structures.
  • 4+ years of professional engineering experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense secret clearance.

Preferred:

  • Experience in troubleshooting and technical problem solving.
  • Experience with structural design, evaluation, or construction.
  • Knowledge of COLUMBIA Class ship design and layout.
  • Experience supporting deck-plate engineering and construction.
  • Familiarity with construction drawings, system diagrams, and test procedures.
  • Experience managing Change Notices.
  • Project or task management experience.
  • Proficiency with Teamcenter/NX software.
