Job summary

Wake Technical Community College seeks an interpreter/transliterator to support students in classrooms and college-approved settings. You will prepare materials, develop vocabulary, and provide classroom and on-call interpreting services.

As part of a team, you will substitute when needed, mentor junior interpreters, report hours monthly, and promote disability awareness while upholding professional standards and codes of conduct.

Qualifications

  • Facilitates effective interactions between all Deaf and Hearing faculty, staff and students at Wake Technical Community College
  • Possesses the ability to interpret/transliterate receptively and expressively in all settings in the college
  • Ability to arrive on-time for assignments and maintain commitments to student meetings
  • Follows the Code of Professional Conduct as written by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
  • Comprehensive knowledge of American Sign Language and deaf culture
  • Ability to exhibit good interpersonal skills and work well with others
  • Demonstrated abilities and experiences working with a diverse population

Responsibilities

  • Prepares appropriately for each instructional meeting by reviewing course materials and prepares technical vocabulary for classroom interpreting and development of professional skills
  • Provides classroom and on-call interpreting/transliterating for conferences, ceremonies, and school events
  • Works as a team interpreter in classrooms or meetings as requested
  • Substitutes for other interpreters on an as-needed basis
  • Promotes disability awareness and helps the school staff, faculty, and students develop positive attitudes toward disabilities
  • Follows a schedule provided by the Coordinator for each semester
  • Submits hours on an appropriate basis for payment monthly
  • Mentors, trains, and provides feedback to less experienced interpreters regarding the enhancement of sign language interpreting skills as needed
