Job summary

Sunnyside Community Services is seeking a College Readiness Student Advisor to guide high school students through college planning, applications, and financial aid processes. The role involves direct student interaction, outreach to families, and coordination with counselors at Queens Technical High School and partner Sunnyside schools in Queens.

The position is part-time and temporary (one-year contract, potentially renewable) with hours Mon–Thu 10am–3pm and Fri 9:30am–noon.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or two years of relevant work experience.
• Experience working with high school students or academic programs.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Strong motivation and teamwork to promote youth outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Develop meaningful relationships with students and families.
• Meet one-on-one with high school students and assist with college applications.
• Assist with FAFSA and financial aid process.
• Maintain updated records of appointments and outcomes in Excel.
• Chaperone college tours and connect participants with post-secondary resources.
• Collaborate with school counselors and staff; conduct outreach via phone and email.

College Readiness Student Advisor (Part-Time; Temporary)

As a College Readiness Student Advisor, you will have the opportunity to play a critical role in shaping the futures of high school youth by providing comprehensive guidance and support in their post-secondary planning through college access and career development journeys. By working closely with students and their families, you will help them navigate the complex college planning, admission, and financial aid processes, and empower them to identify and pursue their college goals. This is a highly rewarding and fulfilling position that will allow you to make a meaningful impact on the lives of young people.

Responsibilities

• Develop meaningful relationships: Create rapport with students, show a genuine interest in their success, practice active listening, provide moral support, and validate student ideas.
• Uphold professional attitude and appearance.
• Meet one-on-one with high school students and assist them with the college application process.
• Assist students and parents with the financial aid/FAFSA process.
• Keep an updated Excel sheet carefully, including future appointments, and meeting outcomes.
• Serve as a chaperone for college tours.
• Connect participants with resources for post-secondary success (SAT courses, college prep mentors, additional tutoring, school/placement visits, etc.).
• Work closely with students’ guidance counselors or school staff.
• Outreach to participants and their families via telephone and email regarding post-secondary preparedness and program attendance.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

• Experience working in college readiness programming preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• High motivation and willingness to work as part of a team to promote successful outcomes for youth.
• Strong leadership, mentoring, and team-building skills.
• Excellent punctuality, attendance, and reliability is a must.
• Computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.), Google Suite/Office 365, and online platforms such as Google Classroom, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams.

Status: Part-Time; Temporary: one-year contract, potentially renewable.

Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 10 am – 3 pm; Friday, 9:30 am – noon. Some evenings and/or weekends may be required. This role has gaps in work due to holidays and school closures. One-year contract that is potentially renewable.

Reports to: Program Specialist for College Access

Compensation: $20.00 – $22.00/hour

Work Location: Queens Technical High School in Long Island City, and/or partner SCS schools based in Sunnyside, Queens or in surrounding neighborhoods.
