  • Work Schedule: 35 hours per week, Regular, Full Time, Monday – Friday, 10am – 6pm (Hybrid 3 days on site 2 days remote or fully onsite)

Program Overview:

Expanded Horizons College Success Program is a comprehensive eight-year program which is designed to ensure that high school students are college-ready and admitted to a college that fits their interests and abilities, and graduate from that institution on time. Our eight-year cohort-based model allows high school students to benefit from college readiness programming that includes SAT preparation, college readiness workshop, overnight college tours and career/college counseling. Designed as a program to help meet student financial needs, Expanded Horizons students accrue scholarship dollars for every year they participate fully in the program to be used while in college.

Job Summary

The College Access Coordinator provides comprehensive college access and readiness services to high school students participating in the Expanded Horizons College Success Program. This role delivers individualized college and financial aid advising, facilitates college readiness programming, coordinates college tours, and supports students throughout the college application, admissions, and matriculation process. The College Access Coordinator collaborates with families, schools, and higher education partners to help students achieve their post-secondary goals while maintaining accurate program records and contributing to successful program outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Advise high school students towards individualized personal post-secondary educational and career goals.
  • Provide advisement in all aspects of the college application and financial aid process.
  • Research and share information on scholarships, internships, and jobs for Expanded Horizons high school students.
  • Provide early awareness counseling to approximately (30) 9th, 10th, and 11th graders.
  • Make college recommendations to a caseload of 15-20 high school seniors.
  • Lead the coordination and attend day and overnight college tours to northeastern colleges.
  • Become familiar with the academic and social environments at the various colleges alumni are considering to recommend suitable matches.
  • Manage and support the college admissions and matriculation process for all high school seniors.
  • Recruit students from partner high schools on the Lower East Side and neighboring communities.
  • Collect and maintain accurate paper and electronic records of all students and activities.
  • Be active in researching issues and trends in college admissions, higher education, and standardized testing.
  • Ensure that all participants and prospective students have submitted all required paperwork for enrollment.
  • Track all college applications, admissions offers, and final college decisions through Over grad.
  • Collaborate with Expanded Horizons family members and high school staff to ensure that students receive support throughout their high school careers.
  • Establish relationships with college admissions staff, NYS opportunity programs, other college-bound programs (CBO) and local high schools.
  • Attend local monthly college access meetings and annual admissions conferences through the National Association of College Admissions Counseling.
  • Other related duties as assigned by Supervisor
Essential Physical Job Functions
  • Able and willing to travel to various colleges throughout the five boroughs and the Northeast
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree required with preference given to Education and Human Services related fields.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in college access counseling with high school aged youth, preferably in New York City.
  • Strong commitment to supporting the academic achievement and access to higher education of young adults who are low income, immigrants, and/or will be the first in their families to attend college.
  • Understanding of the settlement house model of human service and comprehensive commitment to its tenets.
  • Knowledge of CUNY, SUNY, HBCU and Common application systems.
  • Familiarity with the financial aid process which include the completion and submission of financial aid forms (FAFSA, TAP and CSS profile).
  • Knowledge of application process for NYS Opportunity programs.
  • Membership in/or active participation in the College Access Consortium of NY.
  • Understand intersectionality as it pertains to race, gender, class, privilege and other identities.
  • Excellent skills in verbal and written communication, including effective platform delivery.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and practice the principles of positive youth development.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team.
  • Knowledge of the financial, academic, and social skills necessary to be successful in college.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing and presentation skills.
  • Exceptional organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Suite, and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Bilingual Spanish or Mandarin a plus.
