Position Summary

The AACC Certified Police Officer is tasked to protect life and property at Anne Arundel Community College. Police Officers provide a professional presence to present a sense of safety and security for the students, employees, and visitors. Police Officers conduct diligent vehicle and foot patrols of the campus parking lots, streets, sports fields, campus buildings, classrooms, labs, offices, and areas of congregation. Police Officers conduct criminal and traffic investigations, write reports, interview and interrogate suspects, make full custody arrests, and transport arrestees. Police Officers collect and preserve evidence, conduct field sobriety tests, testify in court, maintain building security, and enforce Criminal Law, Civil Law, Maryland Traffic Law, Education Article, College Policies and the Student Code of Conduct. Police Officers must maintain updated and thorough knowledge of the laws and college policies.

Police Officers provide First Aid, CPR, and emergency medical and combat care to sick and injured persons, assist members of the public, perform vehicle jump start and lock-out services, and call for service. Police Officers train for active shooters, barricades, suicides, and hostage situations, respond to despondent individuals, domestic violence incidents, Title IX, and Cleary Act incidents. Police Officers interact with persons experiencing mental health issues and work toward resolutions.

Police Officers must work in all-weather/hazardous conditions. Police Officers patrol with a Community Policing attitude but maintain physical and mental readiness for traditional law enforcement tactics. Police Officers inspect and maintain equipment and college police vehicles.

Must successfully pass all mandatory new employees, annual in-service, and retaining programs. This position has been designated as an essential employee because of its importance to the college. The employee is required to work during College emergency closing events.

Hiring date is on or about July 01, 2025.

Pay dates occur on the 7th and 22nd of each month. If those dates fall on a weekend, the pay date occurs on the Friday prior to the 7th and 22nd. As an employee of the college, you are eligible for a comprehensive benefits package .

In the best interest of the College, only individuals who are residents of Maryland or one of the following states will be eligible for employment at the college: Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia or the District of Columbia. The college will annually review this restriction and, if appropriate, expand the list of states of employment eligibility.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct diligent patrols of the campus parking lots, streets, and sports fields; foot patrols of campus buildings, classrooms, labs, offices, and areas of congregation.
  • Enforce laws and College policies. Maintain an updated and thorough knowledge of laws and college policies they enforce.
  • Conduct investigations of crimes and traffic accidents/offenses.
  • Conduct field Interviews of victims, witnesses and suspects.
  • Interrogate suspects, make full custody arrests, and transport arrestees.
  • Identify, collect, and preserve evidence and contraband.
  • Gain access to various investigative programs and software, including the MVA database, National Crime Information Center, Report Exec report software, Student database, Resource25 Class and Event Listings, CCTV system, MD Case Search, J-Portal for warrant checks, E-Tickets for Maryland Traffic tickets, and Automated Crash Reporting System.
  • Maintain building security by locking and unlocking College buildings and rooms on campus property and ensuring that restricted access areas are kept secure.
  • Proactively engaging in various crime prevention activities.
  • Provide emergency medical aid to sick and injured persons, including First Aid, CPR, AED, Naloxone, and combat casualty care (tourniquets).
  • Provide assistance to motorists with jump starts, lockouts, tire changes, disabled vehicle towing, and assistance to pets or children locked inside vehicles.
  • Provide assistance to Anne Arundel County police or other agencies with traffic control and direction or other functions as needed.
  • Identify and respond to Hazardous Material spills, Gas Leaks, Bomb Threats, Missing Persons, Fire and Security Alarms, and other emergencies.
  • Provide assistance with traffic control and security-related functions for College and community special events and functions held on campus.
  • Provide assistance to persons with physical disabilities, intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, and those experiencing mental health issues.
  • Maintain physical fitness and mental readiness for walking foot patrols, performance of personal rescue operations, and traditional law enforcement functions.
  • Train for and respond to despondent individuals, active shooters, barricades, and hostage situations.
  • Act as Officer in Charge in the absence of the Shift Commander.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must be at least 21 years old and a U.S. Citizen.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of law enforcement experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have a good driving record.
  • Must possess a current Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) certification or meet the MPCTC requirements for recertification within three (3) years of separation from a law enforcement agency.
  • Must undergo and successfully pass an extensive background investigation with no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.
  • Must pass an oral interview board, a physical examination and drug screen, a psychological evaluation, and a polygraph examination.
  • Effective oral communication skills in person and using a two-way radio. Knowledge of grammar sufficient to write investigative reports.
  • Must be capable of effectively operating a Public Safety Police vehicle during both day and night, in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic, and in unsafe road conditions such as fog, smoke, rain, ice, and snow.
  • Must be able to identify evidence and substances that provide the basis for criminal offenses and infractions.
  • Must have the physical condition needed to walk foot patrols, climb flights of stairs, physically push/pull heavy objects, and perform rescue functions in accidents, emergencies, and disasters, including emergency dragging, lifting, and carrying people away from dangerous situations. Must be able to successfully pass a mandatory annual physical agility assessment.
  • Firearms and defensive tactics proficiency are required.
  • Must be able to operate and demonstrate proficiency in required police equipment, including handgun, handcuffs, O.C. Spray, Expandable Baton, and any other equipment approved for use by the department.
  • Must be able to work flexible rotating hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, college closings, and required overtime due to staffing shortages.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge, skills, and ability in law enforcement tactics and weaponry.
  • Trained in Active Shooter and tactical movement.
  • Law enforcement experience in a higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of Title IV, Clery Act, FERPA, and Violence Against Women Act.
  • Advanced Medical Training.
  • Knowledge, skills, and experience as an instructor in a law enforcement or related setting.
