Job summary

NC State University is seeking a College of Engineering Academic Advisor in Raleigh to guide first-year and transfer engineering students through course choices, degree requirements, and campus resources. You will help students build a solid foundation for engineering success and prepare materials for outreach and onboarding programs.

Essential Job Duties:

The College of Engineering is seeking an Academic Advisor to support current and prospective first-year and transfer engineering students as they navigate their academic journey. This role will provide you an opportunity to make a meaningful impact by helping students understand their academic options, connect with campus resources, and build a strong foundation for success in engineering.

Responsibilities include:

• Provide individualized academic advising to first-year and transfer engineering students on registration, course selection, degree requirements, and other academic matters.
• Monitor academic progress, identify concerns, and connect students with appropriate strategies, resources, policies, procedures, and services to support successful degree progress.
• Review transcripts and apply transfer credits toward degree requirements, working with academic departments to address credit-transfer questions or discrepancies.
• Teach one to two sections of E 122: Engineering Student Success during the spring semester.
• Develop and maintain advising materials and resources for first-year and transfer students in partnership with the coordinator, assistant dean, and student services manager.
• Partner with the Strategic Planning and Marketing Manager to develop communications and resources for newly admitted transfer students.
• Support student programs and participate in events, including orientations, welcome events, and First-Year Engineering Design Day, and recruitment initiatives.
• Serve on relevant university and college committees, build productive partnerships that support college and university goals, and contribute to other priorities as assigned by the supervisor.

This position offers you the opportunity to play a key role in the student experience within the College of Engineering. Through academic advising, teaching, programming, and recruitment, you will help students make informed decisions, overcome challenges, and build a strong foundation for their engineering education.

Other Responsibilities:

• In addition to the core responsibilities of this role, there may be occasional opportunities to take on additional duties. This offers an opportunity to build on your skills, explore new areas, and gain a deeper understanding of the department’s operations.

Minimum Education and Experience:

• Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience

Other Required Qualifications:

• Experience advising at a higher education level
• Professional work record characterized by effective leadership and innovation with the ability to inspire and engage students and colleagues
• Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to respectfully and effectively communicate with a varied constituency
• Understanding of the intricacies and complexities of multifaceted student advising populations with unique needs
• Interpersonal skills to build effective bridges and collaborative relationships, with the ability to exercise good judgment, discretion, and integrity
• Comprehend and effectively use Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and similar Google applications in addition to Adobe Acrobat/Fox-it
