The Division of Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists.

The Public Engagement Group / Street Ambassadors unit is a critical outreach support team for the TP&M Division. This unit is vital to the agency's public engagement strategy. The Ambassadors provide capacity for public input in the development of Street Improvement Projects (SIPs) and support project-based outreach and public awareness goals.

The Public Engagement Group seeks a motivated college intern to support visual storytelling, content development, and digital asset organization. This role offers hands-on experience in civic communications and contributes to public engagement projects across the city.

Under the guidance of the Communications Design Lead, the college aide will support documenting community outreach, producing creative assets, and streamlining systems. Ideal candidates are creative, detail-oriented, love photography, and are eager to learn, thriving in collaborative environments.

What You’ll Do
  1. Assist with capturing high-quality photos and videos during fieldwork and events.
  2. Edit photos for internal and public use using Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, or similar tools.
  3. Develop visual guidelines and training materials for staff and partners.
  4. Support organizing and tagging the photo library and digital assets.
  5. Contribute to other creative projects and update web content, such as the Projects & Initiatives website.

The role includes photography, videography, writing, design, editing, and learning new creative skills.

Preferred Skills
  • Solid photography skills with basic editing (Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, or similar).
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to work independently and manage small projects.
  • Strong organizational skills for digital files and tasks.
  • Comfortable with creative and technical tasks.
  • Basic proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite; InDesign and Illustrator are a plus.
  • Basic web content management and familiarity with Drupal.
  • Basic video capture/editing skills or creative use of smartphones.
  • Writing or storytelling experience for captions, blurbs, or web copy.
Hours/Shift

17 hours/week during school; 35 hours/week during breaks.

Minimum Qualifications

For Assignment Level I: Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school; employment conditioned on ongoing student status.

For Assignment Level II (IT): Same as Level I, with a focus on IT-related coursework (9 semester credits).

For Assignment Level III (IT Fellow): Same as Level I, with relevant coursework in IT and a 9-credit requirement; appointments made by the Technology Steering Committee.

Special Note

Maximum tenure is 6 years. Students can work full-time during vacations but not more than half-time during the semester.

Additional Information

Eligible for federal and state loan forgiveness programs. Residency in NYC is generally required within 90 days of employment, with some exceptions.
