Job summary

South Burlington, City of (VT) is seeking a skilled operator for the wastewater collection system to ensure safe, efficient service and regulatory compliance. The role involves cleaning, televising, repairing lines, and maintaining GIS data, with focus on preventing overflows and blockages.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required.
  • Four years of relevant experience in operation and maintenance of collection systems and pumpstations, or equivalent experience with mechanical equipment.
  • Vermont Grade 1 DM-Domestic Wastewater license is required.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Vermont Class B CDL with tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within six months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures efficient operation of the wastewater collection system, minimizing overflows and blockages.
  • Ensures compliance with State and Federal water quality regulations and South Burlington ordinances; provides input on plans required by regulations and ordinances.
  • Cleans, televises, and repairs wastewater lines; collects data and updates GIS.
  • Operates the City’s Vactor trucks to prevent and remove blockages.
  • Maintains accurate records of operations, testing and maintenance; prepares reports for the Superintendent and regulatory agencies.
  • Performs major and minor equipment maintenance as necessary.
  • Identifies deficiencies and upgrades for the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) and provides input on CIP development.
  • Coordinates activities between Water Quality staff and other city divisions; performs other tasks to meet City goals.
  • Follows safety protocols and uses appropriate PPE.
  • Tracks and summarizes work completed on work orders.

Job description

  1. Ensures the efficient and effective operation of the wastewater collection system, minimizing overflows and blockages. Ensures efficient operation, cleanliness and maintenance.
  2. Ensures compliance with State and Federal water quality regulations and standards and South Burlington ordinances. Provides input on plans required by regulations and City ordinances.
  3. Conducts activities like cleaning, televising, and repairing wastewater lines and related infrastructure, data collection and GIS updates.
  4. Operates the City’s Vactor trucks to prevent and remove blockages.
  5. Maintains accurate records of operations, testing and maintenance activities, and prepares reports as required for Superintendent and/or regulatory agencies.
  6. Performs major and minor equipment maintenance as necessary.
  7. Identifies deficiencies and upgrades needed for the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). Provides input on CIP development.
  8. Supports the coordination of activities between the Water Quality staff and other Divisions and Departments within the city and performs other tasks or functions necessary to accomplish City and Department goals and objectives.
  9. Completes tasks using appropriate safety protocols and personal protective equipment.
  10. Tracks/summarizes work completed on work orders.

  3. Minimum of a Vermont Grade 1 DM-Domestic Wastewater license.
  4. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  5. A valid Vermont Class B CDL license with a tanker endorsement required or ability to obtain within six months of employment.

  2. Demonstrated ability to understand and execute VT State discharge permits and compliance requirements.
  3. Demonstrated ability to collect varied types of information and data and to report said information effectively.
  4. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.
  5. Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships with employees and the public.
