Job summary

RAE Corporation seeks an experienced Coil Product Developer to lead end-to-end engineering of custom heat exchanger coils. You will design, analyze, and document coils, ensuring manufacturability and cost-effectiveness while coordinating with Sales, Service, and Manufacturing to meet performance goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, aerospace, chemical or related field from ABET-accredited program.
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant coil design, heat exchangers, or HVAC equipment design experience.
  • Strong CAD skills (AutoCAD/SolidWorks) and engineering analysis capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Design heat exchanger coils per customer specs, standards, and guidelines.
  • Select materials, geometry, and circuiting strategies using engineering judgment.
  • Create drawings and BOMs; release to production via ERP systems.
  • Translate requirements into manufacturable designs using CAD tools.
  • Review thermal performance and implement necessary revisions or optimizations.
  • Coordinate with Sales, Service, and Manufacturing to meet performance and reliability targets.
  • Support cross-functional teams and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Role Overview

The Coil Product Developer is responsible for the end-to-end engineering of custom heat exchanger coils, including thermal and mechanical design, drawing creation, and production release. This position works closely with Sales, Service, and Manufacturing to deliver accurate, cost-effective designs that meet performance and reliability requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Design Engineering & Documentation

    • Engineer heat exchanger coils in accordance with customer specifications, applicable standards, and internal design guidelines.
    • Select materials, tube and fin geometry, and circuiting strategies using engineering judgment and selection software.
    • Create engineering drawings, including detailed mechanical layouts, circuiting diagrams, and bill of materials (BOMs).
    • Translate customer or application requirements into manufacturable designs using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and other engineering tools.
    • Conduct thermal performance reviews and implement revisions or optimizations as needed.
    • Create, maintain, and release accurate bills of materials (BOMs) in IFS Cloud ERP as part of the full production release process.
    • Review and release complete design packages to Production, ensuring design intent and manufacturability.
  2. Team Support & Development

    • May provide technical direction and day-to-day guidance to other coil engineers as assigned by the Coil Engineering Manager.
    • Assist with workload coordination and task assignment within the team as directed.
    • Conduct one-on-one check-ins with assigned team members to support performance, development, and issue resolution.
    • Assist in training and developing coil engineers, sharing technical knowledge and design standards.
    • Capture and maintain engineering knowledge and standards, including design rules, circuiting conventions, and lessons learned, to reduce dependence on tribal knowledge.
  3. Cross-Functional Collaboration

    • Interface with Sales and Application Engineering to clarify specifications, evaluate technical tradeoffs, and support project scoping.
    • Collaborate with Project Management to support timely order releases and address specification questions related to customer equipment.
    • Review material specifications and identify alternate materials when needed.
    • Coordinate with Manufacturing Engineering and shop personnel to troubleshoot coil build issues and support design improvements.
    • Contribute to non-conformance resolution by investigating coil-related quality issues, identifying root causes, and driving corrective actions.
    • Participate in design review and continuous improvement initiatives.
  4. Compliance & Quality

    • Ensure all designs comply with applicable industry codes, company standards, and customer requirements.
    • Support QC and documentation control processes.
    • Maintain accurate design records and technical documentation per company policy.
Desired Qualifications
Education

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Chemical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering [from ABET accredited program.

Experience
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience in coil design, heat exchangers, or HVAC equipment design.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks) and engineering analysis tools.
  • Experience with HVAC systems or thermal design is preferred.
  • Experience with IFS Cloud ERP or similar enterprise ERP systems is preferred.
Technical Skills
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and mechanical design principles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with selection software such as CoilDesigner or Sporlan is a plus.
Professional Competencies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional coordination and documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Able to provide technical guidance to other engineers and work collaboratively across departments when assigned.
  • Able to accurately receive and carry out instructions from the Coil Engineering Manager, and to determine when further clarification is needed before proceeding.
Interaction with Others

Answers to Engineering Manager NAP. Must be able to accurately receive and understand instructions from supervisor to determine if further instruction is required before attempting to complete the task assigned. In constant communication with other departments. It is essential that the employee is able to work with all employees of the RAE team and shows a spirit of cooperation with others in the organization.

Working Environment

Primarily conducted in a climate-controlled office setting, with occasional exposure to a manufacturing environment including moving mechanical parts and vehicles. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
