Experience and Education

  • Required: three to five (3-5) years of acute hospital-based coding experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Experience working remotely is preferred; required for PRN Coders.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree or Associate Degree in Health Information Management and/or a closely related field.
  • Certifications: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, COC, CPC, CPC-H, CIRCC, or other relevant certifications.

Job Duties

  • Code retrospective outpatient accounts using ICD-10 CM and CPT, in compliance with official coding guidelines and conventions.
  • Identify the most appropriate Reason for Visit, Primary Diagnosis, Procedures, Modifiers, and secondary diagnoses to support medical necessity and adherence to edits.
  • Abstract required data elements, including discharge details, procedure dates, physicians, occurrence codes, and others.
  • Review accounts in denial work queues and make recommendations to the Coding Manager.
  • Determine when physician queries are appropriate, identify missing or incomplete documentation, validate chargemaster-driven CPT codes, and complete review and final coding accordingly.
  • Maintain quality and productivity standards set by UTSW/HIM Coding.
  • Mentor and train on designated coding service lines as requested to ensure quality.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of coding guidelines and practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

This role is remote only, and individuals residing in the specified work location will work 100% remotely from an approved worksite.

Any equivalencies to minimum qualifications require prior approval from the Vice President for Human Resources Administration or designee.
