Coding & Compliance Manager, Surgery

Boston, MA – Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

Full‑time, day shift, exempt (FLSA).

Primary Responsibilities
  • Oversee the scope, direction, and effectiveness of the coding team, supporting department billing protocols, standards, and compliance.
  • Develop and implement coverage models, cross‑train staff across specialties, and ensure coding consistency.
  • Sample medical documentation to ensure coding and billing compliance, identify trends, and provide training needs.
  • Monitor and minimize billing and coding inefficiencies by reviewing accuracy, production, audit trends, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Present audit results to stakeholders and conduct presentations/training sessions on documentation, coding updates, medical necessity, and modifier principles.
  • Plan and oversee daily coding team activities, provide feedback on training needs, performance, and process improvement; recommend hiring and terminations as needed.
  • Act as point person for all HMFP audits of medical documentation and post‑payment audits, working with compliance, providers, and billing services.
  • Provide coding services to divisions; work with billing service to resolve denials and other billing issues.
  • Ensure compliance accuracy related to E&M and procedural coding, documentation requirements, and charge‑ticket entry/billing process.
  • Develop and present performance metric reports; serve on committees; maintain relationships with third‑party billing companies.
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) required.
  • 5‑8 years of related work experience.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office and web‑based applications; ability to produce complex documents and maintain databases.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Professional Compliance Officer (CPCO).

Pay Range

$92,955.00 – $125,091.00 USD (annual base salary). Actual compensation may vary based on seniority, education, certifications, geography, and responsibilities.
