Job Description

Conducts coding audits to optimize diagnosis-related groupings. Develops and implements coding instruction classes. Prepares coding guidelines and implements coding changes.

Job Responsibilities
  1. Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of coding guidelines and principles; performs coding audits for optimization.
  2. Provides validation and ad-hoc education to coding staff.
  3. Communicates effectively with coders and CDI staff.
  4. Maintains knowledge of current federal and state coding guidelines and stays updated on system literature from relevant agencies.
  5. Monitors and evaluates case mix index; demonstrates understanding of case mix indexing.
  6. Reviews potential reassignments with accuracy and timeliness.
  7. Implements coding changes and relates them accurately to staff.
  8. Operates under general guidance with varied work requiring interpretation and independent decision-making.
  9. Understands departmental, divisional, and corporate strategies and objectives.
  10. Receives general instructions on routine tasks and detailed instructions on new projects.
  11. Contacts are mainly within own department and may involve customer service.
  12. Performs related duties as required. All responsibilities are considered essential under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent education and experience.
  • Current coding credentials: Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Professional Coder (CCP).
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Skills
  • 1-3 years of hospital-based ASU/ED coding experience (preferred).
