Description

Provides high-level technical competency and subject matter expertise analyzing physician/provider documentation in inpatient health records to determine diagnoses and procedures. Assigns appropriate MS-DRG, APR DRG, POA, SOI, and ROM indicators for inpatient records. Identifies HACs and PSIs to ensure accurate hospital reimbursement. Utilizes encoder software applications, including online tools and references, for ICD-CM diagnosis and procedure codes, MS-DRG, APR DRG, POA, SOI, and ROM assignments.

Essential Functions
  • Incorporates Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors and decisions.
  • Navigates health records and systems to accurately determine codes and indicators impacting reimbursement.
  • Codes inpatient health records using encoder software and online tools.
  • Reviews documentation to support diagnosis and MS-DRG, APR DRG assignments, aiming to reduce denials.
  • Works on inpatient claim edits, adheres to coding standards, and consults with providers as needed for clarification.
  • Utilizes EMR tools for documentation tracking and follow-up.
  • Collaborates with HIM and PBS teams to resolve billing and reimbursement issues.
  • Maintains CEUs and stays current with coding guidelines and regulations.
  • Identifies and addresses workflow or documentation issues impacting coding.
  • Ensures compliance with coding ethics and reports concerns appropriately.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of an AHIMA-approved coding program or equivalent education/experience; Bachelor’s preferred.
  • RHIT, RHIA, or CCS certification required.
  • At least 3 years of inpatient coding experience with proficiency in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and coding.
  • Experience with encoding/grouping software and CAC preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to research and analyze information.
Pay Range

$27.41 - $41.13 per hour
