Major Responsibilities:

  1. Review medical documentation from clinicians, qualified health professionals, and hospitals to assign diagnosis and procedure codes using ICD-10 CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS. Ensure correct code selection following Official Coding Guidelines and compliance with regulations using EMR and/or Computer Assisted Coding software.
  2. Adhere to organizational and departmental guidelines, policies, and protocols.
  3. Review clinician documentation to support assigned codes, capturing all significant diagnoses and procedures for reimbursement and data purposes.
  4. Conduct independent research to stay updated on coding guidelines, regulatory policies, and trends.
  5. Practice ethical coding as per the American Health Information Management Association standards and official guidelines, using ethical judgment in code assignment and sequencing.
  6. Maintain confidentiality of patient records and report any non-compliance practices.
  7. Meet and exceed departmental quality and productivity standards.
  8. Recommend modifications to policies and procedures in line with government regulations.
  9. Process Coding Claim Denials and Rejections when applicable.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Coding Certification from AAPC or AHIMA.

Education Required:

  • Advanced training in Medical Coding or related field (or equivalent knowledge).

Experience Required:

  • Typically 3 years of professional coding experience, including hospital or revenue cycle processes and health information workflows.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelines, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Office and electronic coding systems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, organizational, prioritization, and reading comprehension skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise judgment, meet deadlines, and collaborate effectively.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Normal office environment, ability to sit for extended periods, maintain concentration, and operate necessary equipment.
  • Potential travel to other sites, exposure to road and weather hazards.
