Job summary

Sioux Center Health, part of the Avera Health system, seeks an IP Coder II to accurately assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis and PCS procedure codes for inpatient charts across Avera facilities. You will review documentation, determine DRGs, and mentor colleagues when needed.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team in a supportive environment, with an emphasis on quality and production goals. The role requires AHIMA credentials within 180 days (CCS, RHIA, RHIT, CCA, CDIP) and 1–3 years of coding

Qualifications

• AHIMA certifications must be achieved within 180 days
• RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCA, CDIP credentials accepted within 180 days
• Associate's Health Information Management or Health Information Technology preferred
• 1–3 years coding experience preferred

Responsibilities

• Review all aspects of a patient’s clinical documentation to identify the correct ICD-10-CM diagnosis and PCS codes across Avera facilities.
• IP Coder II may cover Surgery, NICU/PICU, Cardiovascular, Women’s Health, OB, Nursery, Behavioral Health, Orthopedics, Inpatient Rehabilitation and others.
• Determine appropriate DRG based on insurance and medical coding for inpatient charts.
• Serve as a subject matter expert for other health professionals on coding topics when needed.
• Query physicians and staff to ensure full documentation for accurate DRG classification.

A Brief Overview

Responsible for the timely and accurate assignment of diagnostic and procedural codes for inpatient charts for a variety of facilities within Avera Health. Accurate abstracting along with other reporting and editing functions is also within the scope of the Coder. The Coder will work to meet quality and production goals for the position with guidance from other professional staff. Position will work closely with and be mentored by other coding professional staff to ensure accurate coding assignment.

What You Will Do

• Review all aspects of a patient’s clinical documentation in order to identify the appropriate sequence of ICD-10-CM diagnosis and PCS procedure codes for assigned patient charts across Avera’s facilities. Understand the basics of ICD-10-CM and PCS codes in depth, and be willing to update that knowledge through research or other educational opportunities.
• IP Coder II is distinguished by specific services lines which could include but not limited to the following: Surgery, NICU/PICU, Cardiovascular, Women’s Health, OB, Nursery, Behavioral Health, Orthopedics, Inpatient Rehabilitation and others as appropriate.
• Focus on determining the appropriate DRG based on insurance and/or medical coding for inpatient charts or other charts as necessary for the inpatient service line.
• Serves as a subject matter expert for other health professionals within Avera on these topics on occasion.
• Queries physicians and clinical documentation staff to ensure a full capture of the clinical record for appropriate DRG classification and/or medical coding.

Required Education, License/Certification, Or Work Experience

• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) - American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) within 180 Days or
• Certified Document Improvement Practitioner (CDIP) - American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) within 180 Days or
• Registered Health Information Tech (RHIT) - American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) within 180 Days or
• Certified Coding Associate (CCA) - American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) within 180 Days or
• Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) - American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) within 180 Days

Preferred Education, License/Certification, Or Work Experience

• Associate's Health Information Administration or Health Information Technology
• 1-3 years coding experience
