Job description

Summary

Candidates must have a primary address located within the state of Michigan or be willing to move to Michigan to be considered.

This position is responsible for coding all services, including major and minor surgical cases performed in both the office and hospital settings for MyMichigan Medical Group, Family Practice Center, and MyMichigan Urgent Care locations. The role monitors compliance with third‑party payer guidelines to ensure maximum allowed reimbursement and requires broad knowledge of current payer rules and analytical skills to code procedures correctly for timely, accurate reimbursement. The coder works independently and makes decisions based on knowledge of CPT and ICD coding rules and regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Code visits and services performed in the office and hospital setting within 48 hours of receipt. (25%)
  • Use Epic coding edits, CPT Assistant, and CMS coding guidelines to correct ICD, CPT, HCPCS codes, modifiers, and place of service for clean claims. (25%)
  • Code all major and minor surgical cases, including obstetrics, in both settings within 48 hours of receipt. (20%)
  • Interact with physicians/providers routinely to improve documentation. (20%)
  • Participate in continuing education to enhance coding knowledge. (10%)
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Review accounts related to patient or payer complaints and timely communicate with the patient, payer, and physician as needed.
  • Meet established productivity guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate competency in Microsoft Windows and participate in further learning opportunities offered by MyMichigan Health.
Certifications and Licensures
  • E/M Coder: CPC, CCS, CCSP, RHIT, or RHIA
  • Certified Professional Coder – Apprentice (CPC‑A) accepted; valid for 365 days from hire until apprenticeship is verified.
  • Fingerprinting
Required Education
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate degree preferred.
Experience, Training and Skills
  • Two (2) years of physician coding and billing experience, and four (4) years in the medical field preferred.
  • One (1) year of direct physician contact preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy.
  • Proficiency with a personal computer.
  • Knowledge of medical record and patient confidentiality laws.
Great Organizational Skills Are Required

Oral, written, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with individuals and groups at all levels, conveying ideas and concepts clearly.

Physical and Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions

  • Handle multiple tasks, maintain regular attendance, and stay alert.
  • Require dexterity for handling, reaching, grasping, and repetitive movements.
  • Physical demand level: Sedentary. Occasionally lift or carry 0‑10 lbs (0–33% of the workday).
