Qualifications

  • Candidates enrolled in HIT/HIM programs with coding coursework considered.
  • Successful completion of coding assessment required.
  • Certification within one year of hire or graduation required.

Responsibilities

  • Review and assign accurate ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT codes for acute inpatient, SNF, and rehab records.
  • Code ambulatory, ED, urgent care, interventional radiology, and same-day surgery records as needed.
  • Analyze complete medical records to ensure accurate code assignment for reimbursement, quality reporting, and regulatory compliance.
  • Query physicians for clarification when documentation is incomplete or lacks specificity.
  • Collaborate with CDI team to improve documentation quality and coding accuracy.
  • Generate reports and meet productivity and quality benchmarks.
  • Stay current with coding updates, regulations, and best practices.

Job Overview

Search Solution Group is seeking a Coder Analyst - Inpatient on behalf of our client, a non-profit healthcare system, located in Buffalo, NY. This position is responsible for accurately coding acute inpatient hospital, skilled nursing facility (SNF), and rehabilitation medical records to support appropriate reimbursement, regulatory compliance, quality reporting, and clinical research. The Coder Analyst - Inpatient will review complex medical documentation, assign ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT codes, collaborate with physicians and Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) teams, and ensure coding accuracy in accordance with federal regulations and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and assign accurate ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT codes for acute inpatient, skilled nursing facility (SNF), and rehabilitation medical records
  • Code ambulatory, emergency department, urgent care, interventional radiology, and same-day surgery records as needed
  • Analyze complete medical records to ensure accurate code assignment for reimbursement, quality reporting, and regulatory compliance
  • Query physicians for clarification when documentation is incomplete, conflicting, or lacks specificity
  • Review medical records for completeness and documentation accuracy
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Team to improve documentation quality and coding accuracy
  • Participate in CDI meetings, education sessions, and interdisciplinary initiatives
  • Maintain compliance with AHIMA coding standards, CMS regulations, and organizational policies
  • Utilize electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software to accurately document coding activities
  • Generate reports and meet productivity and quality benchmarks
  • Participate in ongoing education to remain current with coding updates, regulations, and best practices
Requirements include
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management (HIM) or Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Health Information Technology (HIT) preferred
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential preferred
  • Candidates currently enrolled in a Health Information Technology or Health Information Management program who have completed coursework in coding, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology will be considered
  • Successful completion of the organization's coding assessment is required
  • Candidates must obtain required certification within one (1) year of hire or graduation, whichever is later
Experience
  • Minimum of six (6) months of coding experience in an acute care hospital preferred
  • Experience coding inpatient hospital records preferred
  • Experience collaborating with Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) teams is a plus

  • Must maintain certification through AHIMA continuing education requirements
