Job summary

The Town of Huntersville is seeking a Code Enforcement Officer to interpret, apply and enforce zoning and nuisance ordinances. You will investigate citizen complaints, prepare paperwork, and communicate with owners to bring violations into compliance.

The role requires knowledge of related codes, the ability to prepare factual reports, and effective written and oral communication. Must have a high school diploma or GED and 1–2 years of experience, with a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

Job description

Performs technical work enforcing the Zoning and Nuisance ordinances and related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Planning Director.

The following duties are those considered most essential to the position. This does not preclude the delegation of other duties considered as necessary by management to successfully complete an assignment or project.

  • Interprets, applies and enforces the Zoning, Nuisance and other related ordinances.
  • Receives and investigates citizen complaints regarding code and ordinance violations.
  • Researches ownership information; prepares and mails necessary paperwork to bring the complaint into compliance; communicates with business and property owners and homeowner associations concerning violations.
  • Issues fines; prepares and assists in processing liens on unpaid fines; assists in processing the release of liens upon payment.
  • Composes correspondence; prepares forms; prepares and maintains various databases & spreadsheets; sets up and maintains files and records.
  • Removes illegal signs.
  • Assists County on minimum housing, building and non-residential development standards.
  • Works weekends as needed.
  • Performs other duties as apparent or assigned.

Thorough knowledge of the zoning ordinances, minimum housing, nuisance and related codes; general knowledge of legal procedures related to the enforcement of ordinances and codes; ability to prepare factual reports and present same to appropriate board or commission; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to enforce ordinances and regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, public officials, associates and the general public.

High school diploma or GED and 1 to 2 years’ experience in code enforcement. Or a combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills to complete the essential functions and job responsibilities of this position.

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.This position’s physical requirements involve sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required; balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and/or walking.

Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a loud noisy location.
