Job summary

The City of Federal Heights is seeking a temporary full-time Code Enforcement Officer to uphold local ordinances, respond to animal and zoning concerns, and support community safety efforts. Starting compensation is $56,705 with a defined 5-step progression, non-exempt status, and 4-10 hour shifts.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Issues verbal and written warnings and/or summons to violators; follows up on notices issued; writes reports and testifies in court when required; responds to inquiries and explains codes and ordinances.
  • Traps and captures animals; transports to shelter; removes dead animals and prepares vehicle impound documentation.
  • Prepares annual code enforcement budget for supervisor review; maintains records; prepares reports and statistical data; maintains customer service standards.
  • Attends community meetings as needed; assists with special programs and events; ongoing training with animals and animal investigations.

Position Objectives:

The City of Federal Heights is looking to fill a temporary full-time CodeEnforcement Officer position.

This position will end in December 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Enforceslocal ordinances and state statutes related to abandoned vehicles, animals,trash, weeds, and zoning violations. Patrols city to identify and addressviolations. Issues verbal and written warnings and/or summons to violators.Follows-up on notices issued. Writes reports and testifies in court whenrequired. Responds to public inquiries, complaints, concerns and suggestions.Interprets and explains codes and ordinances.
  • Trapsand captures animals and transports to shelter. Destroys animals whennecessary. Removes dead animals from streets and disposes of them properly.Investigates animal cruelty violations. Verifies automobile VIN numbers. Tagsabandoned vehicles and arranges towing. Prepares vehicle impound documentation.
  • Preparesannual code enforcement budget for review by supervisor and departmentdirector. Prepares records of daily activities; maintains files. Preparesannual statistical reports and maintains database. Maintains high level ofcustomer service. Attends community meetings as needed. Assists with specialprograms and events.
  • Ongoingtraining with animals, animal investigations, up-to-date awareness of zoonosis.Assistance with animal awareness and training for a county or northern region,
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledgeof applicable City, county, State and federal statutes, regulations, ordinancesand codes.
  • Knowledgeof the policies, procedures and goals of the Federal Heights Police Department.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • ValidColorado Drivers License and good driving record,current rabiesvaccine.
WORKING ENVIRONMENTS/PHYSICALREQUIREMENTS:
  • Physicalactivities include frequent sitting and regular standing, walking, running,kneeling, crouching/stooping/squatting, twisting upper body, lifting andcarrying up to 50 pounds, dragging up to 75 pounds; coordination, jumping;hearing, seeing, speaking, and manual dexterity.
  • Workoutdoors in heat and cold, uneven terrain, and in confined spaces; handlingvicious or dangerous animals; interactions with upset or angry individuals.
  • Maybe exposed to infectious diseases.
  • Frequentdriving is required.

The City of Federal Heights provides the following benefits to employees: 11 holidays, vacation accruals for full-time employees are based on years of service from 6.67-13.33 hours per month. Full-time firefighters accrue vacation based on years of service from 12-18 hours per month.Full-time employees accrue sick leave at the rate of 8 hours per month of service to a maximum of 960 hours. Part-time employees accrue sick leave at a rate of 1 hour per 30 hours worked. Regular full-time employees, except for police officers and firefighters, are required to participate in the City’s 401(a) retirement plan. A voluntary 457 plan is also available to all regular employees.Police Officers and firefighters participate in a State-approved retirement plan, FPPA.The City of Federal Heights offers both short-term disability and long-term disability to its regular and part-time employees.Police officers and firefighters are eligible for long-term disability benefits in accordance with the terms and conditions set forth by the State of Colorado’s Fire and Police Pension Association (FPPA).The City of Federal Heights offers life insurance benefits to all full- and part-time employees. Part-time employees must work a minimum of 30 hours per week to be eligible for life insurance benefits. The City also offers a voluntary life insurance plan for employees to purchase additional life insurance.Regular and part-time employees are eligible for City of Federal Heights benefits the first of the month after their hire date. Part-time employees must work at least 30 hours per week to be eligible for pro-rated benefits.Medical benefits are offered through Colorado Employers Benefit Trust (CEBT), which is self-funded multiple employer trust that currently provides employee benefits for over 300 public entities, school districts, and colleges. The City of Federal Heights offers the choice of three medical plans through CEBT. Employees can choose from an EPO, PPO, or Kaiser HMO plan.Vision insurance is provided through VSP, and dental benefits are offered through Delta Dental.
