The City of Amarillo is seeking a dedicated inspector to perform building and property inspections under the Community Improvements Manager. You will handle nuisance issues, substandard structures, junk, weeds, and parking enforcement duties to ensure compliance with municipal codes.

Qualifications

  • Valid Texas driver’s license or obtain within 30 days.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare comprehensive reports and notify property owners of violations.

STARTING PAY: $21.00 per hourSUMMARYUnder direction from the Community Improvements Manager, this position performs a variety of inspections of building and properties to ensure compliance with City of Amarillo Municipal Code, nuisance complaints, substandard structures, weeds and uncultivated growth, junk and debris, junk vehicles, building code requirements. This position also performs Parking Enforcement duties.No supervision of others.ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIESPerforms inspections on residential and commercial buildings, mobile homes and signs, investigating complaints to ensure compliance to the City of Amarillo’s Municipal Code.Performs graffiti, junk, and debris inspections.Performs inspections and duties relating to the Junk Vehicle program.Performs field inspections for compliance with City Ordinances as needed.Performs Parking Enforcement job duties.Inspects substandard structures and properties, preparing comprehensive reports and providing documentation and notification to property owners.Conducts re-inspections to verify compliance with codes, laws, and regulations.Prepares reports for presentation to Condemnation Appeals Commission for condemnation procedures.Provides information to the public regarding the requirements and policies of the City.Coordinate with other agencies and contractors, monitoring condemnation and demolition process.Provides documentation of inspections, research property and inspection history utilizing necessary software and equipment.Collaborates with the other inspectors, departments, agencies as required to ensure compliance with codes.Investigates, interprets, and issues zoning violation notices as necessary.May be required to prepare cases and testify in Municipal Court.Performs other job-related duties as assigned.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSRequires a High School Diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of one-year experience with high public contact. Bilingual in Spanish preferred. Must obtain the ICC Property Maintenance Code the ICC Code Enforcement Officer Certification, within twelve months of employment. Valid Texas Driver’s License required or obtained within 30 days. Must be able to complete and pass a TCOLE Personal History background check.A City Marshal employee must have an excellent reputation to maintain the public’s trust. The following factors would automatically disqualify an applicant: Any felony or Class a Misdemeanor conviction; Class B Misdemeanor conviction within the last 10 years; any conviction of family violence; currently under indictment for any criminal offense; or a discharge from the military under less than Honorable conditions. The followings factors could disqualify an applicant: Any illegal possession or use of a controlled substance, including marijuana; excessive traffic convictions; or a history of bad debt.PREFERRED REQUIREMENTSTEEX Basic Code EnforcementKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge of inspection and code enforcement, working with municipal and locally adopted codes.Knowledge of laws, ordinances, and codes.Ability to withstand rigors of motivating various hazards to include in and around construction sites through all weather conditions and maintain acute sensory perceptions of surrounding environment to perform inspections.Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing.Strong verbal and written communication skills.Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.Ability to work independently, safely, and with minimal supervision.ADA PROFILEReasonable accommodation will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position. Schedule consists of 8-hour shifts, Monday - Friday.
