Job summary

City of Omaha is seeking a skilled inspector to enforcement of the City Mechanical Code for hydronic heating and cooling systems, boilers, and pressurized vessels. You will inspect installations for compliance with approved plans and codes, and work independently with oversight from supervisors.

The role requires seven years of journey-level experience in relevant trades or as a stationary engineer, plus a valid license and ability to travel within the city.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of steam and pipe fitting installation and repair materials and procedures.
  • Knowledge of boilers and pressure vessels construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of codes and ordinances regulating installations and operation of boilers and vessels.
  • Knowledge of safety standards for boilers, hydronic and HVAC systems.
  • Knowledge of warm air heating, ventilation, and air conditioning installation materials.
  • Knowledge of city codes governing HVAC installation and repair.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints.
  • Ability to detect code violations and assess material quality.
  • Ability to use computer software and technology for job tasks.
  • Ability to learn new computer/electronic systems.
  • Ability to communicate written or oral instructions clearly.
  • Ability to work safely and adhere to policies.
  • Ability to establish good working relationships with staff and public.
  • Physical ability to sit/stand/walk 51–75% and lift up to 25%.
  • Ability to handle up to 20 pounds force for object movement.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect new, replacement, and retrofit installations for compliance with codes.
  • Check licensed operators and assist in qualification testing.
  • Review plans to ensure code compliance and suggest changes.
  • Prepare reports and maintain inspection records.
  • Perform related duties within classification scope.
