About VertiSource HR

VertiSource HR is a turn-key payroll and human resources organization providing comprehensive payroll, HR, benefits, and workforce solutions to businesses. We are seeking an experienced, strategic, and hands‑on Co-Controller to help lead our accounting and financial operations in a fast-paced, growing environment.

Position Summary

Working in partnership with the Senior Controller and financial leadership team, the Co-Controller helps direct the Company's accounting function and safeguards the accuracy, timeliness, completeness, and integrity of financial information. The role combines strategic financial partnership with hands‑on oversight of general accounting, accounts payable and receivable, cash management, payroll- and benefits‑related payments, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, audits, tax compliance, and multi-entity operations.

The successful candidate will maintain a strong command of day-to-day accounting details while providing clear financial insight and practical recommendations that support profitability, operational efficiency, growth, and long‑term business strategy.

Key Responsibilities
Accounting Operations & Close
  • Partner with the Senior Controller to oversee daily accounting operations and maintain a documented system of accounting policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and complete general ledger records and ensure transactions are recorded in accordance with GAAP and Company policies.
  • Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable, including timely processing of vendor obligations, invoicing, collections, and appropriate controls within QuickBooks.
  • Review journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and other accounting transactions; maintain the chart of accounts and organized, audit-ready records.
  • Lead or support monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities, ensuring balance sheet accounts are reconciled and supported and unusual transactions or discrepancies are resolved.
  • Deliver accurate and complete monthly financial statements to management no later than the 10th day of the following month, subject to established reporting requirements. Identify and implement opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, close efficiency, automation, and scalability.
Financial Reporting, Planning & Analysis
  • Prepare and present monthly financial reporting packages, financial and operating metrics, and key performance indicators for executive management.
  • Analyze revenue, expenses, profitability, cash flow, operating performance, and budget-to-actual and forecast-to-actual results; investigate material variances and communicate actionable recommendations.
  • Lead or support the annual budgeting process, rolling forecasts, financial models, and short- and long-term financial planning in partnership with department leaders.
  • Evaluate financial risks, trends, and opportunities and recommend forecast changes as business conditions evolve.
  • Prepare financial analyses for pricing, contracts, capital expenditures, investments, acquisitions, and other strategic initiatives; translate complex findings for non-financial leaders.
  • Recommend appropriate benchmarks for measuring Company and subsidiary performance.
Internal Controls, Audit & Compliance
  • Design, implement, maintain, and periodically assess internal accounting controls, including appropriate segregation of duties; remediate identified control weaknesses.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local reporting and tax requirements.
  • Coordinate required documentation for external audits and serve as an accounting contact for auditors, tax professionals, financial advisors, and other outside partners.
  • Assist with corporate and client workers' compensation programs, including policy renewals, premium tracking, payroll reporting, injury claim reporting, and year-end audits.
  • Ensure accurate workers' compensation payroll and class-code mapping within Worklio and maintain supporting documentation for audits and filings.
Multi-Entity Operations, Acquisitions & Systems
  • Support accounting operations for subsidiaries and related entities, including consistent policies, controls, transaction-processing practices, intercompany reconciliations, and standardized reporting.
  • Monitor subsidiary financial performance and assist with integrating newly acquired entities, systems, controls, and processes.
  • Support financial due diligence for acquisitions and strategic opportunities by analyzing historical financial statements, cash flow, working capital, debt, liabilities, tax matters, and operational risks.
  • Evaluate and improve accounting-system workflows, integrations, reporting tools, dashboards, access controls, and data accuracy; support system implementations and upgrades.
  • Manage outsourced accounting functions as assigned by financial leadership.
Leadership & Collaboration
  • Serve as a trusted financial partner to executive management and collaborate effectively with accounting, operations, payroll, HR, sales, clients, and outside advisors.
  • Help establish accounting department goals, priorities, performance expectations, staffing plans, and coverage needs.
  • Supervise, coach, train, and develop accounting personnel as assigned, promoting accountability, accuracy, continuous improvement, and professional growth.
  • Communicate financial issues clearly, challenge assumptions when supported by data, and develop practical solutions.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Accounting experience, including significant responsibility for general ledger accounting, financial reporting, reconciliations, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and demonstrated ability to manage accurate, timely financial reporting and strict close deadlines.
  • Hands‑on proficiency with QuickBooks and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, organizational, written communication, and verbal communication skills.
  • Sound judgment, integrity, discretion, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in an evolving organization.
Preferred

  • Experience in payroll, HR, PEO, benefits administration, staffing, or professional services, including Worklio or a comparable HRIS/payroll platform.
  • Experience with workers' compensation policies, payroll reporting, class‑code mapping, claims reporting, and year‑end premium audits.
  • Experience preparing small‑business or LLC tax returns; managing multiple entities or subsidiaries; supporting acquisitions and due diligence; and working with external auditors, tax advisors, and financial institutions.
  • Experience with accounting or ERP implementations, process automation, system integrations, and financial reporting technology.
Performance Expectations
  • Maintain accurate, reliable, and audit‑ready financial records.
  • Deliver timely monthly financial statements and maintain a disciplined close process.
  • Strengthen internal controls, accounting procedures, and visibility into cash flow and financial performance.
  • Provide management with meaningful analysis and communicate financial risks proactively.
  • Support profitable growth and help build an accounting function capable of scaling with the organization.
Work Schedule & Environment

This is a full‑time, on‑site position; remote work is not available. Work is performed primarily in a professional office environment with regular interaction with executive leadership, employees, clients, vendors, auditors, financial institutions, and outside advisors.

Occasional travel may be required to Company subsidiaries, offices, client locations, acquisition targets, or other locations for meetings, audits, due diligence, or operational reviews. Periodic evening or weekend work may be required during month‑end or year‑end close, audits, budgeting cycles, acquisitions, or other time‑sensitive activities.
