Coating Technician - MIDNIGHT SHIFT: 11 pm - 7 am. There is a 15% Shift Differential for this shift. Training is available!
What You Will Do
- Operate thin film coating, characterization and test equipment according to established procedures, schedules and process parameters.
- Retrieve the appropriate coating designs and program them into the coating system operations controller.
- Operate coating equipment according to established parameters and procedures while maintaining schedule requirements.
- Determine evaporation layer endpoints with a high degree of accuracy.
- Monitor multiple high-volume coating chambers simultaneously while supporting peers with their operations.
- Evaluate coating designs and prepare evaporation materials and components for production.
- Inspect evaporation components to ensure they meet operational requirements; replace worn, contaminated or damaged components with cleaned or new components as needed.
- Set up coating chambers and use calibration equipment to verify proper setup and quality control.
- Review and double-check design and run requirements before loading each coating run.
- Observe, collect and document relevant data from calibration and production runs and evaluate results for process performance.
- Operate characterization and test equipment and interpret test results.
- Maintain accurate coating and equipment logs and other required documentation.
- Take traces between coating runs to verify system performance.
- Communicate daily activities, process information and quality-related issues during daily quality meetings.
- Accept responsibility for the quality and performance of assigned thin film coating processes and equipment.
- Support the cleaning area with loading of optical components and preparation of evaporation materials.
- Maintain inventory controls and perform minor equipment maintenance with minimal support.
- Learn nonstandard system operations at a basic level.
- Audit personal and peer procedures to promote process consistency.
- Support senior operators in training new employees.
- Provide engineering support through timely and accurate process and equipment information.
- Follow all applicable safety, environmental and quality procedures and requirements.

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Manufacturing experience preferred.
- Ability to work effectively in a demanding, fast-paced production environment.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize work and maintain production schedules.

- Ability and willingness to work with acids, radioactive materials and other hazardous or toxic chemicals in accordance with established safety procedures.
- Ability to work in a cleanroom environment; makeup and perfumes are discouraged to help prevent contamination.
Physical & Safety Requirements
- Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods, including 3-4 hours at a time.
- Ability to wear a full-face respirator and maintain a clean-shaven face when required for respirator use.
- Ability to lift, push and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to bend and stoop as required.
- Ability to use a step stool or elevated working platform to access coating chambers and perform disassembly/reassembly activities.
- All employees are required to follow site EHS procedures and Coherent Corporate EHS standards.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment physical evaluation associated with respirator use.
- This position requires annual physical evaluations associated with respirator use.
Quality & Environmental Responsibilities
Depending on location, this position may be responsible for the execution and maintenance of applicable quality and environmental management systems, including ISO 9000, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and other relevant standards.
The role is expected to support compliance with applicable requirements and contribute to maintaining the quality, environmental and process standards associated with assigned responsibilities.
