Job summary

The Nature Conservancy’s Virginia Coast Reserve seeks a Marine Restoration Specialist to lead oyster reef construction, monitor eelgrass and bay scallop restoration, and supervise volunteers while coordinating with researchers across VVCR's Marine Habitat Restoration Program.

You will manage long-term oyster monitoring data, generate reports, work with GIS datasets, and communicate findings to VVCR staff and partners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in science related field and 3 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience operating and trailering boats independently up to 24 feet in length.
  • Experience with GIS software and data to create maps.
  • Experience communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means.
  • Experience with managing complex databases, including data entry and report production.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, safe driving record (per TNC’s Auto Safety Program) and provide own transportation and personal automobile insurance.
  • Experience working in physically strenuous settings sometimes to the point of physical fatigue, in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, and on difficult and hazardous terrain.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and monitor oyster reef construction and eelgrass seed collection.
  • Coordinate logistics with researchers and volunteers.
  • Maintain VVCR’s oyster monitoring database and marine habitat GIS data.
  • Create reports and data records to inform conservation plans.
  • Conduct field surveys and collect data in varied conditions.
  • Communicate findings to VVCR staff and project partners.
