Overview

Job Summary

Supports interscholastic athletics programs at AACPS for students who would like to pursue the challenges as well as the benefits of sports. May be assigned as Head, Assistant, or Volunteer Coach.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities
  • Provides a set of written training rules/code of conduct policies to their students at the beginning of the season; refer to the Athletic Handbook (V. Coaching Guidelines & regulations. Sec 2, No.2a.) for guidance.
  • Determines the personnel of the team.
  • Administers appropriate forms of discipline for infractions of athletic policies, rules, or regulations, consistent with the Administrative HELP Manual’s reference to due process.
  • Provides written communication to the student athlete regarding the requirements for earning an athletic award prior to the start of the season.
  • Submits to the athletic director an eligibility roster for certification at least one week before the first contest.
  • Collects and reviews completed required forms from each student athlete prior to their participation.
  • Maintains a written inventory of equipment, supplies and uniforms at the conclusion of the season.
  • Familiarize themselves with all current medical protocols and guidelines involving interscholastic athletics.
  • Knows and enforces all state, county and school athletic policies and procedures.
  • Attends appropriate meetings in the school and at the county level and attend appropriate rules interpretation meetings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
Additional Duties
  • Assistant Coach - Reports to and works with the head coach to establish a uniform program.
  • Assistant Coach - Provides the head coach with all requested information.

Education
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university preferred.
Experience
  • Athletic experience at the middle school, high school, college, organized recreation council program, and/or professional level in the sport or related coaching experience required.
  • Current teaching experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
  • Demonstrated ability to speak and write effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with students, staff, and parents.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).
Licenses and Certifications
  • Holder or be eligible for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification issued by American Heart Association, Inc (AHA) or American Red Cross authorized training centers required; and
  • Holder or be eligible for Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certification issued by American Heart Association, Inc (AHA) or American Red Cross authorized training centers required; and
  • Holder or be eligible for First Aid Certification issued by American Heart Association, Inc (AHA) or American Red Cross authorized training centers required;
  • Successful completion of Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries Course issued by AACPS required.
  • Holder or be eligible for Concussion in Sports Certification issued by National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) required.
  • Holder or be eligible for Heat Illness Prevention Certification issued by National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) required.
