Job Description

General Definition of Work

Under the supervision of the Principal and/or Athletic Director, the Scholastic Bowl Coach is responsible for organizing, instructing, and leading the school's academic team. This role involves cultivating intellectual growth and competitive readiness in students for interscholastic trivia and academic tournaments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Plan and execute engaging practice sessions focused on expanding academic knowledge, trivia recall, and buzzer speed.
  • Recruit a diverse group of students to build a robust and competitive academic team.
  • Coordinate team registration, transportation, and itineraries for local, regional, and state-level tournaments.
  • Maintain and inventory team equipment, including specialized buzzer systems and study materials.
  • Manage the program’s budget, fundraising efforts, and entry fee disbursements.
  • Foster a positive environment centered on good sportsmanship, teamwork, and intellectual curiosity.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience as a coach or participation in the sport at the high school or college level preferred.
  • Valid state teaching license or substitute certification is highly preferred.
  • Prior experience participating in or coaching academic competitions (e.g., Quiz Bowl, Scholastic Bowl) is strongly desired.
  • Broad general knowledge across core scholastic disciplines, including history, literature, science, mathematics, and the fine arts.
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills.

Required

  • Current certification in CPR, First Aid, and AED

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND WORK CONTACTS Work is typically performed in a standard school classroom or auditorium setting. The role requires the occasional lifting and transporting of light equipment (up to 20 pounds). Frequent, professional interaction with students, parents, faculty, and tournament officials is expected. Thisposition requires availability for evening practices and extended weekend hours for travel to competitions.

EVALUATION Performance will be evaluated annually on the effectiveness by which one has carried out the above responsibilities.
