Job Title: Coach/Bus Operator Apprentice

Status: Represented – ATU 998

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Department: Transportation

Wage: 1st year $23.76/hr; 2nd year $26.02/hr; 3rd year $28.31/hr; 4th year $30.29/hr

JOB SUMMARY:

Milwaukee County Transit System is seeking apprentices for the Coach/Bus Operator position. This State-approved, one-year registered apprenticeship program offers classroom and hands-on training from experienced mentors. Apprentices will obtain their CDL and learn safe passenger bus operation while serving Milwaukee County communities.

As an Apprentice, you will learn to operate buses safely, efficiently, and courteously, following predetermined routes and schedules. You will develop excellent customer service skills, assist passengers with boarding and alighting, and meet regularly with a mentor. Successful completion grants a Coach/Bus Operator Journey worker’s card issued by Wisconsin.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Operate transit buses safely, complying with policies, guidelines, and traffic laws.
  • Collect fares, inspect passes, and issue transfers courteously.
  • Operate bus systems, including radios and fareboxes, per policies.
  • Provide accurate information and timetables to passengers.
  • Call out stops and transfer points per ADA and policy guidelines.
  • Assist disabled passengers with ramps, lifts, and securing seats.
  • Demonstrate customer service excellence.
  • Perform vehicle inspections and report defects.
  • Monitor detours and adjust routes accordingly.
  • Handle lost articles, incident reports, and maintenance defect reports.
  • Meet regularly with mentors to discuss progress and challenges.
  • Represent Milwaukee County Transit System professionally.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • At least 21 years old.
  • Availability to work any hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Valid Class D Wisconsin driver’s license for at least one year.
  • Valid CDL Class B with “P” Endorsement and no restrictions, or permit issued 14 days prior to start.
  • Maximum six points on driving record in last 3 years.
  • No recent revocations or suspensions due to moving violations.
  • No OWI violations in the last 5 years; no more than one OWI in 15 years, and no more than two total.
  • Strong work history with good attendance.
  • Successful completion of Bus Operator Training.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to operate New Flyer and Gillig buses.
  • Effective driving and emergency handling skills.
  • Adaptability to changing environments.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including split shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Effective communication and de-escalation skills.
  • Good judgment and decision-making abilities.
  • Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Ability to interpret maps and schedules.
  • Knowledge of streets, routes, and stops.
  • Understanding of bus rules, policies, and fare structures.
  • Willingness to wear the company uniform.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

  • Tolerance for varying temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb stairs, reach, walk, bend, lift, and operate bus pedals.
  • Comfortable sitting for extended periods.
  • Ability to fit behind the steering wheel with adequate clearance.
  • Ability to work in dusty, noisy, and fumes-filled environments.
  • Physical exertion up to 25 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently.
  • Pass a physical exam including drug screening and functional test.
