Job description

We are seeking a COSr. Physician Assistant who practices within the guidelines of the department and institution in accordance with the Physician Assistant Delegation Agreement required and approved by the State of Maryland and appropriately credentialed by the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Sr. Physician Assistants are classified as senior staff by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Sr. Physician Assistants will work under the direction, supervision, and responsibility of an attending physician, and in accordance with established policies evaluate patient health status through diagnostic procedures and tests. Sr. Physician Assistants will work alongside fellows, residents, nurses, radiologic technologists, and other healthcare professionals to provide the highest quality therapeutic patient care. Sr. Physician Assistants must have a comprehensive understanding of clinic and/or surgical procedures, patient care, procedures, medical protocols, and testing procedures. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, psychology, pharmacology, clinical medicine, radiology, microbiology, and pathology is required.

Interventional Neuroradiology has three core Sr. Physician Assistant concentrations: Lab Proceduralist, Clinic Patient Care, and Bedside Proceduralist. A PA may be assigned to one concentration or may work in several. Descriptions of the roles and responsibilities within each of the concentrations are provided below.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Interventional Radiology Lab Proceduralist

  • Performs emergent, urgent, and routine image-guided procedures in accordance with staff member’s SOM Delineation of Privileges and approved State Delegation under the direction of an attending physician.
  • Assists with emergent, urgent, and routine image-guided procedures under the direction of an attending physician.
  • Under the direction of a physician and within the scope of practice, reviews the clinical needs of the patient and confirming the appropriateness of the ordered intervention.
  • Reviews/obtains medical history and performs focused physical examinations.
  • Reviews/obtains laboratory tests, imaging studies, and other diagnostic tests where necessary.
  • Obtains informed consent, discussing the risks, benefits, and alternative therapy options.
  • Monitors intra-procedure vital signs and level of sedation.
  • Manages patient complications during and after procedures.
  • May participate in clinical research initiatives as a study team member.
  • Initiates a Code and performs cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR/ACLS) where necessary.
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for organizing time and workload to meet patient, staff, and divisional needs.

Clinic Patient Care

  • Analyzes and evaluates patient history, physical examination findings, and laboratory values, making preliminary diagnoses for review by physicians.
  • Serves as an educational and clinical resource to multi-disciplinary staff and patients.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary conferences to coordinate patient care.
  • Performs clinic and hospital-based patient assessments/consultations.
  • May participate in clinical research initiatives as a study team member.
  • Assists in the admission, inpatient management, and discharge of Interventional Neuroradiology patients.

Bedside Proceduralist

  • Performs emergent, urgent, and routine image-guided procedures.
  • Reviews the clinical needs of the patient and confirming the appropriateness of the ordered intervention.
  • Obtains informed consent and documents procedure notes.
  • Manages patient complications during and after procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in a related clinical area, with proficiency in the area of specialty. Five years related experience preferred.
  • Residency or fellowship programs in the area of specialization may substitute for some experience.
