Job description

The City of Commerce City is excited to announce a new opportunity for a Co-Responder Mental Health Clinician to join the Commerce City Police Department (CCPD)! This position demonstrates a commitment to community well-being and offers a chance to make a significant impact. As a Co-Responder Mental Health Clinician, you will support law enforcement during behavioral health calls, helping to de-escalate crises, divert individuals from the criminal justice system, and connect them with resources.

About the Role

This role reflects the City’s commitment to compassionate community responses. You will partner with police officers, conducting behavioral health assessments, crisis intervention, developing care plans, and making referrals. Responsibilities also include case management, resource linkage, monitoring, follow-up, and crisis management.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with police to determine appropriate care levels and follow safety protocols. The CCPD fosters a supportive environment where your expertise is valued.
  • Impact: This limited-term position offers the opportunity to directly improve community members' lives through de-escalation, stabilization, and connecting individuals with resources. You will also contribute to officer training on mental health and de-escalation techniques.
  • Responsibilities: Respond to calls, perform mental health and risk assessments, prepare legal documents for care transitions, and conduct follow-ups. Strong communication skills are essential for interacting with clients, families, and professionals. The role may include public speaking and community engagement, as well as maintaining accurate documentation.

This position is initially funded through December 2026 via a grant, with prospects for permanence as part of long-term workforce development.

Salary depends on experience, with a range of $68,035 - $85,044 annually. We offer a comprehensive benefits package including health and wellness benefits, a 6% retirement match, a 2% 457 Deferred Compensation match, PTO, and work/life balance initiatives.

Qualifications

Master’s degree or doctorate in social work, clinical mental health counseling, psychology, or a related field from an accredited program. Licensure in Colorado as a psychologist, LPC, LAC, LMFT, or LCSW is preferred, along with at least two years of post-licensure experience in crisis counseling, substance abuse, behavioral disorders, de-escalation, and working with diverse populations. Certifications such as CAT or CAS are a plus.

Experience in social work, co-responder roles, victim advocacy, or therapy, especially with mentally ill and at-risk populations, is required. Experience working with law enforcement or criminal justice agencies is preferred. Candidates must obtain CPR and First Aid certifications within the probationary period, hold a valid Colorado Driver's License, and be at least 21 years old.

  • Understanding of modern office practices and applicable laws, including emergency mental health holds and HIPAA regulations.
  • Proficiency with computers and software, tactful communication, safe vehicle operation, and handling sensitive issues.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations, maintain punctuality, communicate clearly, organize tasks, and handle confidential information.
