Job description

The Johns Hopkins University is seeking a CO Physician Assistant for the Department of Otolaryngology, Division of Head and Neck Endocrine Surgery. The Physician Assistant will work in an outpatient clinic setting both independently (after a period of supervised training and skills acquisition) and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary health team focused on providing comprehensive care to Thyroid and Parathyroid patients. They will work to diagnose and treat patients with a variety of thyroid and parathyroid conditions including tumors, nodules and hyperparathyroidism. The employee will be responsible for making independent decisions regarding patient care and must exercise professional judgment and decision-making.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Under the direction, supervision and responsibility of a physician, and in accordance with established policies.
  • The PA will evaluate patient’s health status through diagnostic procedures and tests.
  • Provides therapeutic patient care under direction of a Physician and in accordance with established protocols.
  • Provide timely and high-quality Otolaryngology consultation services of inpatients at the Johns Hopkins Hospital; and outpatients at the clinic.
  • Service team in completing patient-care and administrative task; refinement of protocols and monitoring of quality and clinical outcomes towards service improvement.
  • Completion of perioperative, order sets and discharge instructions.
  • Clinic-based evaluation and management of patients with symptoms of thyroid and parathyroid conditions.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively and efficiently with patients, patient family members and all members of the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Ability to competently perform (after a period of supervised training) thyroid and parathyroid procedures requiring use of required instruments.
  • Ability to learn and apply knowledge of thyroid and parathyroid conditions and disorders.
  • Ability to function effectively in a fluid, dynamic and rapidly changing environment.
  • Must be self-directed and possess mature judgment and motivation.

Communications

  • Must be able to communicate clearly in verbally and in written form.
  • Must efficiently use the Epic electronic medical record system (after a period of training)
  • Scientific writing skills are valued.
  • The position is almost exclusively focused on thyroid and parathyroid conditions, and prior training and experience in these disciplines is highly desirable.
  • Must successfully complete all necessary Epic training courses and other applicable clinical software systems. Prior experience with Epic is advantageous.
  • Must complete all required HIPAA and other specified online training courses.
  • Other computer or other special needs for the position: Operates personal computer and/or laptop to access email, computerized scheduling and documentation databases, and other basic office support software.
  • Sonogram will also be a routine part of daily practice. Prior experience with ultrasound will be advantageous.

  • Ability to analyze and evaluate patient history, physical examination findings and laboratory values, and makes preliminary diagnosis of patients for review by physician.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body.
  • Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program.
  • Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related experience in a otolaryngology and/or procedure-oriented surgical field.
  • History of strong organizational skills, analytical skills, customer service skills, clinical sensitivity, medical terminology, excellent computer skills and the ability to multi-task.
  • High level of interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills is essential.
  • Excellent communication, mathematical computation, spelling, and grammar skills.
  • Knowledge and compliance of HIPAA rules and regulations in the dissemination of patient Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Experience in the Johns Hopkins system.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.

**Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date**
