Job summary

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) invites a Software Engineering Co-Op to contribute to a replacement file-integration application. You will work through the full software delivery lifecycle from requirements through deployment, with ownership of the production-oriented solution.

You will gain exposure to NYISO development standards, security practices, and collaboration with technical and business partners, including QA and infrastructure teams, in a hybrid Albany, NY area

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field.
• Rising junior or senior standing.
• Foundational programming and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to learn unfamiliar code, systems, and technical processes.
• Ability to communicate clearly, document work, ask questions, and collaborate with technical and business partners.
• Coursework or project experience in databases and software engineering is preferred.
• Experience with Java and Spring Boot is preferred.
• Experience with SQL and relational database concepts is helpful.
• Familiarity with source control, automated testing, APIs, or systems integration is preferred.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot is a plus.
• Strong attention to detail and willingness to take ownership of assigned deliverables.

• Confirm requirements with technical and business stakeholders.
• Review the proposed architecture and implementation approach.
• Document technical decisions, assumptions, and open questions.
• Translate the approved design into user stories and acceptance criteria.
• Develop the replacement application using NYISO development, security, review, and source-control practices.
• Use AI-assisted development tools as an engineering aid while applying established development standards.
• Collaborate with database, infrastructure, software engineering, quality assurance, and business partners.
• Perform developer testing and resolve identified defects.
• Partner with quality-assurance professionals to define repeatable functional tests.
• Automate appropriate tests for future patches and enhancements.
• Create technical, operational, configuration, and support documentation.
• Contribute to cutover, rollback, and implementation planning.
• Support production implementation and knowledge transfer to the supporting team.

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) applies cutting-edge technology to operating a reliable electricity system, managing competitive markets for wholesale electricity, and planning for the Empire State's energy future. The NYISO takes pride in recruiting, developing and retaining highly talented individuals. Our co-op programs give young professionals the opportunity to gain a fundamental understanding of New York electricity markets, bulk electricity systems and how we plan for New York State’s energy future.

The NYISO is seeking a Software Engineering Co-Op to develop a replacement for an existing file-integration application. Guided by an established technical design, the student will participate in the full software delivery lifecycle, from understanding business and technical requirements through development, testing, implementation, documentation, and transition to ongoing support.

The replacement application will use database-backed configuration to make file-movement changes more efficient and reduce the need for code changes and full software deployments. The design will also improve recoverability when errors occur and establish a reusable approach for similar integrations. This assignment offers meaningful ownership of a production-oriented software solution and broad collaboration with technical and business stakeholders.
