Job summary

Smith & Richardson in Illinois is seeking a Machine Operator to oversee general operation of production machines (Swiss CNC Lathe) and perform first-article and in-process inspections. You will use micrometers, calipers, and other inspection tools to ensure parts meet specifications.

Responsibilities include setup assistance, tool condition checks, reading workmanship standards and drawings, maintaining clean work areas, and adhering to safety standards while meeting production targets.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent; reading, basic math, blueprint reading.
• 1-2 years machine operating experience; Swiss CNC preferred, CNC lathe also a plus.
• If no experience, training period: 3 months to 1 year.
• Written and verbal work instructions, workmanship standards, quality control docs (work orders, move tickets).

Responsibilities

• Operate and monitor production machines such as Swiss CNC and CNC lathe.
• Perform first article and in-process inspections using micrometers, calipers, pin gauges, and comparators.
• Check material type and size before loading into machines.
• Load material into vises, clean chips from clamping areas before securing jaws.
• Observe machines for abnormal sounds or tooling wear; adjust as needed.
• Understand and modify tool offsets as required.
• Inspect and replace worn tooling; touch off new tooling as needed.
• Meet or exceed production rates stated on work orders.
• Read workmanship standards and part drawings; document relevant details on work orders.
• Perform and document SPC/quality procedures when applicable.
• Identify nonconforming product or material; take appropriate action.
• Maintain tools and equipment; assist with setup operations.

Job Title:

Machine Operator

Reports to:

Production Manager

General Description:

General operation of the production machines such as SWISS and CNC Lathe when necessary. Responsible for first inspection and inspection during production.

Responsibilities: (50% Operating, 40% Inspecting, 10% Other)

• Use micrometers, calipers, pin gages, comparator and various other inspection equipment appropriately
• Turn on machine. Inspect for obvious problems. Inspect first part off at startup of machine.
• Check for Proper Material and Size before loading into Machine.
• Load Material into vises as required, making sure all chips have been cleaned out of clamping areas before tightly securing vise jaws
• Operate machine watching and listening for possible problems. (I.e. Loud noises, unusual sounds, broken or worn tooling etc.)
• Ability to understand and modify tool offsets
• Inspect and replace broken/worn tooling. Ability to touch off newly installed tooling
• Ability to meet or exceed production rates stated on work order
• Read, understand information in workmanship standards and part drawings
• Fill out appropriate sections of work order
• Perform and document S&R inspection procedures when appropriate (SPC charts, work orders, move tickets)
• Identify nonconforming product or material
• Wash tools and return to storage area
• Complete the preventative maintenance check list
• Know and follow safety standards
• Move parts to next operation
• Remove scrap
• Help with set-up operations
• Other duties as required

Physical and Visual Activities:

• Standing, walking, sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, visual acuity-far/near depth perception, field of vision and accommodation.

Physical Demands:

Job Qualification Requirements:

• Knowledge
  • High school graduate or equivalent; reading, basic math, blueprint reading
• Experience
  • 1-2 year machine operating experience. Swiss CNC Experience Preferred, but CNC Lathe experience is also a plus.
  • If no Experience then Training Period: 3 months to a year
