Job summary

ABOUT THE POSITION

CNC Programmer will prepare operating programs for various production CNC machining centers using Master CAM software. Programming for drilling, tapping, milling, boring, and other machining operations over a range of surfaces, diameters, and depths in order to meet engineered specifications. Must determine operation sequence, select, and adjust tools, and proof tests CNC programs for each planned machining operation. May occasionally work as operator to meet production requirements.

Key Deliverables
  • Perform quality assurance test to ensure the products meet design speciation's.
  • Support engineers by providing crucial input on the design
  • Prepare SOPs for setup and operation for operators.
  • Load programs in CNC machines and instruct operators on setup.
  • Troubleshoot problematic set-ups and document changes.
Key Activities & Responsibilities
  • Develops programming for various CNC machines using Master CAM software; determining proper feeds, speeds, and cutting tools; and maximizing efficiency of cutter paths.
  • Prepares work instructions for setup and recommends the use of inserts, fixtures, and tooling for various job operations.
  • Partners with Engineering and Manufacturing departments to develop safe and efficient part programming and processes that supports lean manufacturing goals.
  • Manages programming related files on the company network to maintain accuracy, security, and ease of access to those who use the files.
  • Demonstrates full commitment that all produced CNC programs follow Astec's quality requirements.
  • Responsible to write & create CNC programs and method sheets for machine shop before the machining operations getting started.
  • Oversees produced CNC programs are optimized by utilizing programming software.
  • Monitor's machining times and optimize it from time to time by implementing new machining techniques and methods.
  • Maintains and updates the CNC program database at all times with matching the revisions of programs against the engineering technical drawings.
  • Work closely with machinists by assisting with preparing, optimizing, and updating programs to improve machining and part knowledge.
  • May operate various machines from time to time providing back-up to shop floor operators to meet production requirements, as needed.
  • Ability to setup, program, operate and troubleshoot CNC lathes and mills with minimal assistance.
  • Performs daily and regular cleaning and light maintenance tasks on CNC machinery after operation.
  • Capably uses gages and measuring instruments to ensure tolerance requirements.
To be successful in this role, your experience and competencies are:
  • Associate of Art's degree (A.A.) from two-year College or similar degree from a technical school; or 5+ years related experience and/or training working as a machining center programmer or operator; or equivalent combination of education and experience equivalent as deemed sufficient by management.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a CNC Programmer in a heavy equipment manufacturing industry. Experience on a variety of CNC controlled machines. Experience on manual machines will be considered in addition to CNC.
  • Minimum 5 years’ knowledge of and experience working with steel.
  • Interpret, read, and comprehend G & M code programs experience preferred.
  • Mazatrol programming experience desirable.
  • Overhead and Jib crane experience required.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as basic math skills, fractions, micrometers, percentages, ratios, proportions to practical situations, and able to convert decimals into inches.
  • Must be able to read and interpret a tape measure as well as machinist measuring tools, blueprints, and bills of material (BOM's).
  • Continue to grow lean knowledge and use the tools to identify and assist with continuous improvement.
  • Maintain positive, cooperative working relationships by working, acting, and communicating with various personalities getting along with customers, vendors, co-workers and management working both individually and as part of a team.

Manufacturing Environment

Shop manufacturing environment exposures include exposure to moving mechanical parts, machinery, tools and equipment, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, motorized vehicles, welding and machining operations, outside weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electric shock. The employee may occasionally be exposed to varying levels of dirt, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, very warm and/or very chilly temperatures. The noise level in the shop can be very loud at times consistent with an industrial assembly facility and may require hearing protection.
