Job summary

Smith & Wesson in Massachusetts is seeking an experienced machinist to perform CNC operations for firearm components. You will setup, load, and adjust Mazak, Mori Seiki, Okuma and other CNC equipment, and work to tight tolerances in a fast-paced production environment.

Responsibilities include verifying settings, maintaining logs, supporting quality control, and collaborating with floor supervisors to meet production schedules while minimizing waste.

Qualifications

• CNC controls knowledge (Fanuc/Yasnac/Mazak/Okuma) and experience with multiple machine brands.
• Experience operating vertical/horizontal milling machines (4–5 axes) and multi-axis lathes.
• Strong math, reading, and interpretation skills for SPC and CMM data.

Responsibilities

• Operate CNC equipment and perform set-up, loading, and adjustment tasks.
• Verify machine settings, document production and quality logs.
• Collaborate with floor supervisors to meet production schedules and minimize waste.
• Maintain safe operation and preventive maintenance of equipment.

Position Overview

Perform machinist duties associated with production of components for pistols, revolvers and rifles. Operate computer numerical controlled machines to fabricate parts. Machinists are expected to have achieved advanced skills and be able to perform complex production work in the following areas: set-up, tech support, and advanced CNC machining.

Pay Range: $32.48 + $2.00 Shift differential

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Performing all general/intermediate machinist duties and responsibilities
• Setting-up CNC equipment
• Loading feed mechanism
• Verifying settings and adjusting CNC accordingly
• Maintaining safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations
• Maintaining equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements
• Managing a co-worker (most positions have a loader/unloader as a helper)
• Ability to manage a normal work load operating 6-10 CNC machines
• Documenting actions by completing production and quality logs
• Working with all floor supervisors and team leaders, making every effort to maintain production schedules, and limiting waste, scrap, re-works or turn backs
• Working with Quality Control personnel to maintain the highest quality product
• Regular attendance (as defined by our policies) is required

Experience and Education

• High School/GED preferred
• Associate's degree and/or equivalent experience in related discipline preferred
• 1-3 years related experience is preferred (typically a CNC certification requires completion of a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training)

Competencies and Skills

• Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: CNC Certification preferred
• Knowledge of CNC controls (ie: Fanuc, Yaznac, Mazak, Okuma), with experience operating Mazak, Mori Seiki, Matsuura, Okuma, Haas, Tsugami (Swiss Turn), and Citizen Screw machines
• Experience running CNC vertical and horizontal milling machines with 4 and 5 axes, and lathes with 7 and 9 axes
• Experience with off-line tool setter (Parlec helpful)
• Ability to interpret CMM reports and adjust CNC accordingly
• Knowledge of SPC (Statistical Process Control) and the ability to adjust machines to a chartMust have math skills equal to that used in a machining environment
• Must have and demonstrate excellent conceptual skills, process improvement, verbal communication, functional and technical skills, controls and instrumentation skills, supply management, tooling, coordination, inventory control, attention to detail, and judgment
• Must have working command of the English language
• Must be able to read, write and interpret the English language
• Must be able to communicate in English verbally and in writing (basic verbal instructions, simple written memos and instructions)
• Basic computer skills preferred

• Must be able to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, stoop, push, pull, carry, reach, twist
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
