The ideal candidate will have a strong attention to detail, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to produce high-quality finished products.

Essential Functions:

Machine Setup & Operation:

  • Set up and operate OD and ID grinding machines to perform precision grinding operations on gears, shafts, and other cylindrical components.
  • Select appropriate grinding wheels, tooling, and machine settings based on material type, blueprint specifications, and required surface finish.
  • Balance and dress grinding wheels as needed to ensure precision and efficiency.

Blueprint Reading & Quality Control:

  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work instructions to determine grinding parameters.
  • Use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators, and CMMs to verify part dimensions and tolerances.
  • Maintain strict adherence to quality standards, identifying and correcting defects before they impact production.

Process Optimization & Troubleshooting:

  • Adjust feeds, speeds, and grinding techniques to optimize cycle times while maintaining part integrity.
  • Troubleshoot grinding-related issues, including chatter, burn, and dimensional inconsistencies.
  • Work with engineering and quality teams to refine grinding processes and improve efficiency.

Equipment Maintenance & Safety:

  • Perform routine maintenance on grinding machines, including lubrication, coolant management, and wheel changes.
  • Follow all safety procedures and wear appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
  • Keep the work area clean and organized, ensuring compliance with 5S and lean manufacturing principles.

Collaboration & Documentation:

  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, engineers, and quality inspectors to resolve machining issues.
  • Complete production logs, inspection reports, and other required documentation accurately.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance grinding processes and overall shop efficiency.

Position starts at $24 per hour.

Position Requirements

Qualifications & Skills:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: Minimum 3 to 5 years of OD/ID grinding experience in a precision manufacturing environment, preferably in gear production.
  • Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in operating manual and CNC OD/ID grinders.
  • Strong understanding of grinding wheel selection, dressing, and balancing.
  • Knowledge of various materials, including hardened steels, and their grinding characteristics.
  • Blueprint & Measurement Proficiency: Ability to read and interpret GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) symbols on blueprints.
  • Skilled in using micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators, and CMMs for precision measurement.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to hold tolerances within ±0.0001” and achieve high surface finish requirements.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong troubleshooting skills to resolve machining issues and improve processes.
  • Work Ethic: Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Safety Consciousness: Commitment to maintaining a safe and clean working environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with CNC-controlled OD/ID grinding machines.
  • Knowledge of gear manufacturing processes, including honing and center lapping.
  • Previous experience in a high-precision aerospace, automotive, or defense manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Standing for extended periods while operating grinding machines.
  • Frequent lifting (up to 25 lbs.), bending, and handling of precision components.
  • Exposure to coolant, grinding dust, and high-noise environments (with proper PPE provided).
