Position Summary

Produces machined parts by setting up and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine; maintaining quality and safety standards; keeping records; maintaining equipment and supplies.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Plans machine by studying work orders, blueprints, plans, materials, specifications, and machine parameters.
2. Configure mills and lathes by entering instructions, setting tool registers, calculating requirements, including basic math.
3. Load machine with workpieces.
4. Verify settings by measuring positions, first-run parts, and sample workpieces.
5. Maintain specifications by observing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures.
6. Achieve organizational goals by accepting ownership for new and different requests.
7. Meet production goals in terms of cycle time, quantity, and quality.

Qualifications and Requirements

1. Experience with Kinetic CNC preferred.
2. Written and verbal communication skills.
3. Knowledge of properties of metals and other materials.
4. Knowledge of basic shop mathematics.
5. Experience in heavy structural fabrication.
6. Ability to read blueprints, shop drawings, and welding symbols.
7. Proficient in operating welding equipment.

Safety Requirements

1. Adhere to all safety rules, policies, and procedures of Southland Steel Fabricators, Inc.
2. Maintain an orderly and clean work area.
3. Attend all required safety meetings.
4. Inspect equipment daily to ensure safety standards are met.
5. Inspect tools daily before use, including extension cords.
6. Use hand and power tools safely with correct guards in place.
7. Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as fire-resistant clothing, gloves, respirators when needed, steel-toe boots, and hearing protection.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

1. Ability to stand for long periods.
2. Occasionally lift or carry tools, equipment, or materials up to 50 lbs.
3. Occasional bending, squatting, or crouching.
4. Handle tools and materials frequently.
5. Work in various weather conditions including cold, heat, and humidity.
