Position Overview

The Machinist will be responsible for operating CNC programmable turning and milling machines to manufacture hardware parts and build fixtures and tooling essential to our rare earth magnets and magnetic assemblies. This role includes supporting magnet machining operations and collaborating with Engineering on process improvement projects to ensure precision and efficiency.

Major Functions

  • Safety

  • Production Support
  • Programming and operation of CNC turning and milling equipment as required to produce machined parts
  • Operation of manual turning and milling equipment as required to produce machined parts
  • Develop, build and modify fixtures, tooling and equipment as required to meet production
  • Build complex assemblies that are non-standard production as determined by Engineering
  • Based on training, set up and run production determined by demand
  • Responsible for maintaining inventory of materials and tools for the fixtures and tooling needed to support operations, maintenance and engineering requirements
  • Process Improvement
  • Create and troubleshoot processes
  • Design tooling and fixturing to improve and/or solve processing issues

  • Use your best efforts and full capability to achieve the outputs assigned
  • When circumstances make it likely that outputs cannot be achieved, or that more could be done, inform your manager in time for adaptive action to be taken
  • Advise your manager when you have ideas you believe might be helpful

Mandatory Role Requirements

  • Knowledge/Education/Certification

Requires high school, plus specialized training, certification, or a two-year degree or equivalent

  • Experience Requires five to ten years' experience
  • Role Complexity Routine and diversified activities about evenly divided, solid basic understanding of specific facts/processes used with some discretion. Impact of errors moderate, operates within limits of accepted practice
  • Degree of Inspection Requires continuous precise inspection using analog and digital electronic devices requiring calibration and interpretation expertise
  • Responsibility for Accuracy Overlooked work details may have some impact on results. Mistakes made generally result in moderate loss to the company, typically material or time loss and requiring minimal time to correct
  • Decision Making Influences costs and processes to some extent to meet goals, has some responsibility for minor operational decisions, may advise mid-management; has minor impact on revenue and Company performance
  • Contacts with Others/Communications Requires frequent verbal communication of a routine nature with other departments, but primary responsibility rests with the supervisor. Regular written communication, such as reports, memos, email and forms required
  • Supervision Received Work done independently and that assigned by the supervisor is about evenly divided; the employee assumes some responsibility for finding and correcting errors, which may have moderate impact on the company; the supervisor is clearly responsible for the work
  • Tools, Machines, and Equipment Used Requires advanced operating skills on complex instruments, machinery or equipment; may have to meet very high quality/quantity goals; may require computer (CNC) programming or operation of personal computer, including knowledge of spreadsheet, database, word processing, and/or graphics software; plus, integration and communications systems; complex adjustment to meet exacting tolerances
  • Responsibility for Equipment and Work Area This role has responsibility for machine set-up, basic maintenance and cleaning; Probability of damage is moderate; with moderate care required on light equipment
  • Responsibility for Confidentiality May occasionally have access to confidential information, such as legal documents and business/financial data. Damage exposure to company is minor
  • Hazards & Working Conditions Low to moderate potential for minor injuries such as cuts or bruises
  • Mental & Physical Demands Role requires periodic physical and continuity of effort with some stress due to a diversity of problems or distractions which interfere
