Job description

SUMMARY

The Machinist (CNC/Manual) position programs and operates one or more CNC machining center to perform drilling, tapping, milling, boring and other machining operations over a range of surfaces, diameters, and depths.Determinesoperation sequence, select and adjust tools and mount in storage matrix. Job set ups may be complex and require milling to very close tolerances.He/She may train and inspect the work of other shop personnel in the correct operation of lathe machining processes and inspect their work. For manual machines, experience setting up and operating either a Harrison lathe that is ten feet between centers and has a 16” swing or a manual engine lathe with a 10- foot bed & turning diameter of 40 inches maximum, to perform horizontal and vertical lathe machining operations on steel in the manufacture of parts for heavy equipment machinery.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may include but are not limited to)

  • Ensure that safe work practices are followed and adhered to
  • Check production schedule or shop request list and plan work tasks
  • Study blueprints, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, setup requirements, and check for errors
  • Accurately measures, numbers, identifies dimensions, and reference points on material for fabrication or other work cells for further machining as necessary
  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines as necessary to machine parts as required
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth, and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media according to established guidelines and procedures
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required
  • Inspect finished work-piece(s) to blueprints, quality standards, exact tolerances; using measuring and inspection tools as necessary
  • Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data to process steel (some pieces weighing as much as 300 lbs)
  • Consults with engineers, production management, programmers, or others to resolve machining or programming problems
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and maintain all equipment, to like new appearance, according to maintenance plans and established procedures
  • Assist with directing work activities of any support staff as necessary (forklift operator, CNC machine trainees, and/or material handlers)
  • Miscellaneous other duties as directed by Machine Shop or Shift Lead

Levels of the Machinist (CNC/Manual) Position

Levels will be determined based on education, experience and equivalents.

  • Machinist (CNC/Manual) Trainee – M (Training Entry Level)
  • Employee works in a learning capacity. May require a technical degree in machining but little to no work experience. Operates one type of machine tool performing such as grinders, millers, drill presses, lathes, on machining operations of moderate complexity while receiving close supervision. Experience of 2 years or less with heavy equipment production line CNC/Manual machining.

  • Machinist (CNC/Manual) I – MI (Beginning Level)
  • Employee works in a learning capacity. May require a technical degree in machining but little to no work experience. Operates one type of machine tool performing such as grinders, millers, drill presses, lathes, on machining operations of moderate complexity while receiving close supervision. Minimum two (2) years’ experience with heavy equipment production line CNC/Manual machining.

  • Machinist (CNC/Manual) II – MII (Intermediate Level)
  • Requires a technical degree in machining and/or a minimum of four (4) years’ experience in heavy equipment production line Manual/CNC machining. Safe overhead and jib crane operation experience required. The employee works in a developing capacity with increased responsibility. Operating one or more types of machine tools and performs machining operations for steel parts, tools and machines with close tolerances or high finish requirements. Fits and assembles where necessary, using machinists' hand tools and measuring instruments, typically will receive limited supervision.

  • Machinist (CNC/Manual) III – MIII (Experienced Level)
  • Requires a technical degree in machining and/or 7+ years of experience in heavy equipment production line Manual/CNC machining. Works in a developing capacity with increased responsibility operating one or more types of machine tools and performs progressive machining operations for steel parts, tools and machines with close tolerances or high finishrequirements.Setups involve familiarity with and understanding of program formats involving combinations of operations such as profile and contour milling, boring, recessing, turning, drilling, threading, etc., to the capacity of the machine and control factor. Checks parts for conformance to specifications, using machinists' hand tools and measuring instruments, typically will receive limited supervision. May make adjustments or program CNC machines in the course of making parts.

  • Machinist (CNC/Manual) III – MIV (Senior Experienced Level)
  • Requires a technical degree in machining and/or 10+ years of experience in heavy equipment production line CNC/Manual machining. The employee performs a full range ofmachining duties requiring a broad knowledge of machining techniquesincluding but not limited to running more than one unit simultaneously,performing advanced setup operations, adjusting and checking out programming, machine troubleshooting, operating numerically controlled machine tools to perform a complex machining operations, exacting tolerances to finishing specifications,and using considerable independent judgment to interpret and apply work guidelineswith considerable latitude to specific situations. May independently make decisions in the absence of a Supervisor or Lead. M4 may have the responsibility to mentor, instruct, and set up machines for operators in the three lower level Machinist positions and provide supervision on various duties.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS

    Must be able to communicate in English to co-workers, see to read manuals, operate computer, & distinguish colors for proper electrical repairs. Lifting devices or assistance is available for many tasks (cranes, hoists, co-workers).

    Safety & Required PPE: Safety glasses, hearing protection, safety-toed boots, & gloves. Welding hood & gloves when welding. Must be willing and able to follow all company safety procedures and OSHA compliance policies.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to a shop manufacturing environment. Shop manufacturing environment exposures include exposure to moving mechanical parts, machinery, tools and equipment, heights, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, motorized vehicles, welding and machining operations, outside weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electric shock. The employee may occasionally be required to work in high places and can occasionally be exposed to varying levels of dirt, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, very warm and/or very chilly temperatures. The noise level in the shop can be very loud at times consistent with an industrial assembly facility and may require hearing protection.
