Job description

The Opportunity | CNC Machinist

1st Shift – 7:00am to 3:30 pm

Your primary function as a VTL Machinist will be to set up and operate CNC VTL machines to produce and repair large, complex parts and assemblies, ensuring dimensional accuracy by following blueprints and quality standards. This includes machining large components up to 78 inches in diameter.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate VTL (Vertical Turning Lathe) CNC machines.
  • Study blueprints and work instructions to set up VTL machines with appropriate tooling, fixturing, and cutting parameters. Ability to indicate parts or fixtures for setup.
  • Perform quality inspections using precision measuring tools to ensure parts meet dimensional tolerances.
  • Follow operational procedures to perform machining functions such as turning, milling, boring, grooving, chamfering, profiling, tapering, and tapping, maintaining drawing specifications including length, diameter, perpendicularity, parallelism, and concentricity.
  • Operate equipment such as bridge cranes, fork trucks, hand trucks, and use computers and manufacturing systems.

Your Expertise:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a four-year machinist apprenticeship or equivalent is preferred.
  • At least 8 years of CNC machining experience.
  • At least 1 year of experience setting up and operating vertical turning lathes (VTLs).
  • Knowledge of cutting tools and machining techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Ability to maintain high quality standards and tight tolerances within .001 inch.
  • Strong understanding of CNC machining principles and programming.
  • Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Ability to troubleshoot machining issues such as tooling problems, incorrect program settings, or machine malfunctions.
  • Attention to detail with high accuracy and consistency.
  • Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing 50 pounds and transport them 10 feet.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain DOD security clearance.

Preferred Experience: Experience operating WFL and Waldrich Coburg machines.
