Job summary

Silgan Dispensing is seeking a skilled CNC Machinist in Thomaston to manufacture, modify, and repair tooling components using manual and CNC equipment. The role requires reading engineering drawings and CAD data, and maintaining high-precision tolerances on varied tooling.

The ideal candidate has 3–5 years in a tooling environment, experience with 5-axis CNC, MasterCam, and G-code, and a strong commitment to safety and quality.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; technical or trade school certification preferred.
• 3–5 years’ experience as a machinist, preferably in a tool room or precision machining environment.
• Experience reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings and tolerances.
• Experience with 5-Axis CNC machines and CAM software.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate manual and CNC machining equipment (lathes, mills, grinders, EDM, etc.) to produce or repair tooling components.
• Interpret and work from blueprints, sketches, CAD files, and written/verbal instructions.
• Perform precision measurements using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and other inspection tools to verify part accuracy.
• Maintain, sharpen, and repair cutting tools, dies, fixtures, and molds.
• Modify and adapt existing tooling to meet updated specifications or production needs.
• Troubleshoot tooling issues and collaborate with engineers, maintenance, and production teams to implement solutions.
• Ensure all machining work meets required quality standards and tolerances.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area in compliance with company safety and housekeeping standards.
• Track and document work performed, tooling changes, and maintenance history.

About this Role

The CNC Machinist is responsible for manufacturing, modifying, and repairing precision tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and machine components to support production and maintenance needs. This role requires a high degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to work from engineering drawings, CAD models, and verbal instructions.

• Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience as a machinist, preferably in a tool room or precision machining environment.
• Experience with 5-Axis, Market Cam, G-Code.
• Experience with MasterCam
• Proficient in the setup and operation of manual and CNC machines.
• Strong knowledge of machining processes, cutting speeds, feeds, and tooling.
• Ability to hold tight tolerances (±.0005” or better).
• Skilled in reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings.
• Basic understanding of CAD/CAM software is an asset.
• Strong problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude.
• Commitment to safety and quality standards.

Physical Demands (Reasonable accommodations provided)

Ability to lift and/or move 35 lbs. Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) on the production floor.

Physical requirements include but not limited to sitting, standing, climbing, walking, lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, stooping, crouching, color determination and grasping.
