Job summary

Johnson Controls in Cranston, RI seeks a CNC Machinist for on-site work in our advanced R&D facility. You will set up, program, and run CNC mills and lathes, collaborating with engineers to meet design intent and tolerances.

The role requires reading engineering drawings, GD&T, and using precision measurement tools to ensure quality. Eligible candidates should be US citizens or permanent residents with related machining education and hands-on experience.

CNC Machinist (on-site)

What You Will Do

JohnsonControls is seeking to fill the position CNC Machinist, based in one of our advanced R&D facilities located in Cranston, RI.

The CNC Machinist will support R&D engineering activities by producing fixturing, prototypes, and small production runs. You will work closely with engineers to align on design intent, machinability, and critical characteristics.

• We require candidates to be US Citizens and/or permanent residents of the US. Sponsorship is not available for this role.

How You Will Do It

• Set up, program, and operate CNC mills and lathes to produce precision components for R&D projects.
• Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T requirements, and 3D models to determine machining strategies.
• Perform manual machining operations (lathe, mill, surface grinder) when required for secondary operations or basic, low volume tasks.
• Inspect parts using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and other precision measurement tools to verify conformance to specifications.
• Maintain equipment, tooling, and work areas to ensure safe and efficient operation.

What We Look For

Required

• Associate’s degree, technical certificate, or equivalent experience in machining, manufacturing technology, or a related field.
• Hands‑on experience programming and operating CNC mills and/or lathes in a prototype or production environment.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical documentation.
• Proficiency with precision measurement tools and inspection techniques.
• US Citizen and/or permanent resident.

Preferred

• Experience working with Haas and Trak lathes/mills.
• Experience using SolidCAM.
• Experience within the fire protection industry.

Compensation

COMPENSATION RANGE: $30/hr - $48/hr (Compensation to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.) This position includes a competitive benefits package. The posted range reflects the target compensation for this role.
