Position Summary:

The CNC Machine Operator is responsible for the setup, operation, and routine maintenance of advanced multi-axis CNC equipment to manufacture precision components in accordance with complex engineering drawings, CAD/CAM models, and technical specifications. This role demands proficiency in CNC programming, machine calibration, and tooling strategies to optimize cycle times, ensure dimensional accuracy, and maintain surface finish standards. The operator must execute all tasks in compliance with safety protocols and quality control procedures, while upholding production efficiency and delivering fabrication output that meets or exceeds client specifications and internal performance standards.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Program, set up, and operate five-axis CNC machining centers, ensuring precise alignment, calibration, and execution of multi-axis toolpaths according to job specifications.
  • Interpret and apply information from technical drawings, engineering blueprints, and 3D CAD models to define machining strategies, tolerances, and finishing requirements.
  • Determine and configure optimal tooling, work holding fixtures, spindle speeds, and feed rates based on material properties and part geometry.
  • Continuously monitor machining operations, performing real-time adjustments to offsets and parameters to ensure conformance with dimensional and surface quality standards.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and diagnostic troubleshooting on CNC systems to ensure consistent performance and minimize equipment downtime.
  • Interface with engineering, CAD/CAM, and production personnel to implement process improvements, reduce material waste, and enhance throughput.
  • Import, edit, and optimize 3D models and toolpaths using Autodesk Fusion 360 or equivalent 3D CAM/CAD software for machining readiness.
  • Safely operate a range of traditional and specialty fabrication tools including woodworking equipment, foam-cutting machinery, and hand tools used for custom millwork and sculptural forms.
  • Accurately verify critical dimensions and product specifications using measurement tools (e.g., tape measures, calipers, squares) to ensure precision and proper fit.
  • Execute detailed assembly and preparation of units for finishing processes, maintaining tight tolerances and high-quality workmanship.
  • Confirm presence and accuracy of all components, hardware, and subassemblies required for each build prior to initiating construction or final finishing stages.
  • Demonstrate foundational carpentry competencies, including cutting, shaping, and joining materials using hand and power tools.
  • Actively participate in product development reviews, including hands-on prototyping, functional testing, and troubleshooting of pre-production units.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and regulations; maintain a safety-first mindset in all operational tasks and work environments.
  • Perform quality control checks throughout the build process to verify part alignment, structural integrity, and conformance to specifications.
  • Accurately document and report non-conformities, defects, or performance issues encountered during production or testing phases.

Mandatory Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of previous fabrication experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of fabrication processes, materials, and technology.
  • Proven experience with assembly work, which would include woodworking, carpentry, sculpting and/or finishing.
  • Experience with graphic design files and programs.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certification in CNC machining preferred.
  • Proven experience operating five-axis CNC machines in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of CNC software.
  • Proficiency with precision measurement tools such as calipers and micrometers.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex technical documents.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to Exert force/lift up to 50 pounds at a time, and/or up to 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to stand for sustained periods of time.
  • Comfortable working within a loud environment, due to noise generated by machinery.
  • Must be willing and able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
  • Able to work additional hours and weekends as needed.
