Job Summary

Set up, operate, load, and unload CNC machines to produce parts that achieve optimal quality and efficiency levels while meeting engineering design requirements.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Interpret and understand simple and complex part drawings.
2. Use precision measuring tools such as micrometers, Vernier calipers, scales, protractors, compasses, height gauges, dial indicators, etc.
3. Utilize machine control codes, computers, part nesting, DNC links, and file transfers to produce parts.
4. Create, verify, and edit machine control programs as part of CNC machine setup and operation.
5. Perform routine operator maintenance, including replacing consumable materials and parts.
6. Manage multiple activities simultaneously, organize work, and respond to error messages or process interruptions.
7. Assist in training other machine operators and helpers.
8. Diagnose and repair machine problems.
9. Take leadership and responsibility for overall equipment performance.
10. Monitor machine performance to meet production standards, manage uptime, and ensure quality. Use punch dies and pressures in hydraulic forming of steel and alloys.
11. Perform oxy/fuel flame and plasma cutting, part layout, inspection, hole drilling, tapping, and milling, understanding appropriate speed and feed rates.
12. Follow guidelines from E.I.s, M.P.s, S.P.s, O.I.C.s, and blueprints when performing tasks.
13. Adhere to all safety policies and participate in safety initiatives promoting zero harm.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Tools and Machinery

Operate CNC machines such as saws, press brakes, manual mills, plasma cutters, and CNC Flex machines. Use tools including micrometers, Vernier calipers, scales, protractors, compasses, height gauges, dial indicators, tape measures, go-no-go gauges, and squares.

Materials

Use personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, hearing protection, welding aprons, face shields, and gloves.

General

Work independently with minimal supervision. Be proactive with excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills. Act with urgency to maximize machine productivity and reduce downtime. Possess strong mathematical skills, including geometry, to determine part dimensions and relationships. Understand metal types, characteristics, and manufacturing processes. Have experience with computers and machine controls.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
