CNC Operator / Lathe Operator # of Roles: 3 Salary: $32-$40/hour Location: Collinsville, IL Step into a high-precision machining environment where your expertise in CNC lathe programming directly drives production quality and on-time delivery. This is a permanent opportunity to own complex turning projects from concept to finished part, working with modern equipment and CAM tools in a stable, well-organised shop.
About the Role:
You will be responsible for programming, setting up, and optimising CNC lathes to produce precision components that meet tight tolerances and customer specifications. Working closely with engineering and production, you will translate blueprints and technical drawings into efficient machining strategies that maximise quality and throughput. Your contribution will be critical in reducing scrap, improving cycle times, and ensuring consistent, reliable output.
Key Responsibilities:
- Program CNC lathes using CAM software to produce complex turned components in accordance with engineering drawings and specifications.
- Set up CNC lathe machines, including tooling, workholding, offsets, and program loading, to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Interpret blueprints and technical drawings, applying GD&T requirements to plan machining operations and verify part conformance.
- Select, configure, and optimise cutting tools and inserts for various materials to achieve desired surface finish, accuracy, and tool life.
- Monitor machining operations, adjust feeds, speeds, and tool paths, and refine programs to improve cycle times and part quality.
- Perform precision measurement and inspection of parts using metrology tools, documenting results and correcting deviations as needed.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot machining issues such as chatter, dimensional variation, surface defects, and tooling failures, implementing corrective actions.
- Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams to support new product introductions, process improvements, and continuous optimisation of turning operations.
Key Requirements:
- Proven experience in CNC lathe setup, operation, and programming in a production or job-shop environment.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and GD&T symbols for turned components.
- Hands-on proficiency with precision measurement tools (e.g.G., micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height gauges, indicators).
- Solid understanding of machining materials (steel, stainless, alloys, etc.) and appropriate cutting parameters for turning operations.
- Demonstrated skill in tooling selection and optimisation to balance productivity, accuracy, and tool life.
- Experience identifying and resolving machining issues, with a systematic approach to root cause analysis and corrective action.
- Competence in using CAM software for lathe programming and post-processing for CNC controls.
- Strong attention to detail, with a focus on producing parts to specification and maintaining consistent quality.
De sirable Skills:
- Experience with specific CAM platforms such as Mastercam, GibbsCAM, or Fusion 360 for turning applications.
- Familiarity with a range of CNC controls (e.G., Fanuc, Haas, Okuma) and their parameter/programming conventions.
- Background in continuous improvement initiatives such as process optimisation, standard work development, or lean manufacturing.
- Exposure to multi-axis or live-tooling lathe operations and more complex turning centres.
- Ability to collaborate on design-for-manufacturability feedback to engineering or customers.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Formal training in machining, CNC technology, or manufacturing (trade school, technical college, or apprenticeship) preferred.
- Certification in CNC programming or machining from a recognised institution is an advantage.
- Documented coursework or training in GD&T and blueprint reading preferred.
If you are a detail-focused CNC lathe programmer who takes pride in producing precise, reliable parts, this permanent role offers a strong platform to apply and further develop your skills — #RIMUS
