Job summary

Joyce/Dayton Corp. is seeking a CNC Lathe Operator I for the day shift in the Portland, IN area. This role requires working to tight tolerances and safely manufacturing parts that meet quality requirements.

You will read process sheets and blueprints, set up tooling, monitor machine performance, and perform basic equipment maintenance while cross-training on other machinery to support production cycles.

Qualifications

• Highschool Diploma or GED required.
• 1 year of proven CNC Lathe experience.
• Overhead crane experience.
• Sound mechanical aptitude with hands-on skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience using steady rest.
• Able to perform machine set up and tooling installation.
• Basic understanding of equipment and processes in the area of responsibility.
• Ability to read precision measuring equipment.
• Basic blueprint reading skills, programming knowledge or experience, set-up capabilities, tooling knowledge, understanding of feeds and speeds.
• Basic knowledge of products and fixturing.

Responsibilities

• Work to close tolerances (.0002”).
• Machine metals including steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
• Inspect parts during production using precision measuring instruments.
• Monitor and maintain machine fluid levels.
• Read process sheets, blueprints, and sketches to determine machining requirements.
• Edit pre-written programs with supervision when necessary.
• Edit program for process improvements and troubleshooting.
• Mount work pieces in chuck or fixtures.
• Select and install tooling in sequence specified on process sheet.
• Observe control displays to verify dimensions, feeds, speeds.
• Override program as needed for machine performance.
• Inspect first run and spot check subsequent pieces.
• Study job packets and organize materials to reduce cycle time.
• Pre-set tools before positioning them in lathe.
• Set up and operate another machine tool during cycles.
• Set up and operate CNC machines using set-up sheets and instructions.
• Utilize inspection instruments to check work per print.
• Possess knowledge of cutting tools and speeds/feeds.
• Perform basic equipment maintenance and cross-train on other machinery.

Summary A successful CNC Lathe Operator I can safely and efficiently manufacture parts that meet all quality requirements. This position is an hourly, non-exempt position and reports to the Production Supervisor.

Job Description

• Work to close tolerances (ie. .0002”)
• Machine metals including steel, stainless steel, and aluminum
• Inspect parts during production using precision measuring instruments
• Monitor and maintain machine fluid levels
• Read process sheets, blueprints, and sketches of part to determine machining to be done, dimensional specifications, set up, and operating requirements
• Edit pre‑written programs with supervision when necessary
• Edit program for process improvements and troubleshooting
• Mount work pieces in chuck, to faceplate, or to fixtures
• Select and install preset tooling in tool posts, turrets or cutters, and automatic tool change magazine, in sequence specified on process sheet
• Observe numerical control displays on control panel and compare with data on process sheet to verify dimensional adjustments, feed rates, and speeds of machining cuts
• Turn dials and switches to override program and correct machine performance
• Inspect first run piece and spot check succeeding pieces for conformance to specifications
• Study job packets and organize materials for next order during cycles to reduce cycle and setup time
• Pre‑set tools before positioning them in lathe
• Set up and operate another machine tool during machining cycles
• Set up and operate CNC machines using set‑up sheets and written instructions with minimal supervision
• Utilize all types of inspection instruments to check work per print without supervision
• Possess knowledge of various cutting tools and has ability to determine various machine speeds and feeds
• Perform basic equipment maintenance
• Crosstrain on other plant machinery as required

Minimum Qualifications

• Highschool Diploma or GED required.

• Basic blueprint reading skills, programming knowledge or experience, set‑up capabilities, tooling knowledge, understanding of feeds and speeds and gearing terminology.
• Basic knowledge of products.
• Some basic knowledge of fixturing.
• Ability to inspect work and meet quality requirements.
• Ability to do light CNC editing.
• Own basic hand tools at minimum.
• Capable of understanding and following routing information.
• Minimal layout capabilities.

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged periods standing.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
