Job description

Step Into the RoleYou start your morning reviewing a new implant design. By 9 a.m., you’re translating that model into efficient NC code for a multi-axis mill. After lunch, you’re on the floor proving out a first-article on a Swiss-style lathe, collaborating with Quality Engineering to finalize a Process Control Plan and a Manufacturing Inspection Plan. Before the day ends, you’ve tuned feeds and speeds on a grinding cell, standardized a legacy program to current best practices, and queued up tooling trials that could shave minutes off cycle time across multiple sites. This is a day in the life of our CNC Applications Engineer. What You’ll DoProgram and optimize CNC equipment across milling, turning, and grinding operations—including multi-spindle, multi-axis, and Swiss-style platforms—supporting complex medical devices, implants, and instruments at multiple facilities.Interpret drawings, 3D models, and sketches to determine cut strategies, select tooling, and set machine parameters (speeds/feeds) aligned with shop processes, customer specifications, and machine capabilities.Partner in process development and DFM with internal and external teams to drive new product introduction and continuous improvement.Revise and refine programs to remove errors and omissions, incorporate new tooling and methods, and accelerate throughput to meet customer delivery commitments.Coordinate with Quality Engineering to support creation of Process Control Plans, Manufacturing Inspection Plans, and gaging/fixturing requirements.Set up machines to run first-article and short-run NPI parts, with occasional small production runs when needed.Design fixtures for post-processing operations.Follow and champion the TOMZ Quality Management System.Perform other duties as assigned. What You BringAssociate degree in a technical or scientific discipline, or equivalent practical experience.5+ years of CNC programming and machine setup experience in medical device manufacturing or a closely related industry.Deep knowledge of NC code, tooling, and end-to-end manufacturing processes.Proficiency with CAD/CAM; SolidWorks and Esprit preferred.Strong blueprint literacy and GD&T application skills.Clear, effective communication with stakeholders at all levels—internal teams and external partners.Proven ability to apply logic and sound reasoning to complex technical challenges.Physical RequirementsAble to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds; team lift or mechanical assist required for items over 50 pounds.Work around oil, grease, occupational noise, cleaning solvents, dust, metal particles, sparks, coolant, and sharp-edged materials; PPE such as safety glasses, dust masks, ear plugs, cut-resistant or chemical-resistant gloves, and engineering controls may be required.Perform keyboard entries with possible frequent use of a computer.
